Traffic cameras being installed on Hwy 1; Wharf to Wharf foot race closes Hwy 1 ramp

Traffic camera installations begin Monday night along a six mile stretch of Highway from Freedom Boulevard in Aptos to Soquel Drive in Santa Cruz. Caltrans is paying Bear Electrical Solutions, of Alviso, $366,000 to install the traffic cameras. The project begins 9 p.m. Monday, July 28 with the ultimate goal of wiring up a closed circuit television system to monitor real time traffic, something that is used in other parts of the state. Through the end of October, nighttime work will occur in the northbound direction 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, while southbound work will take place 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday. In other news,  Sunday, July 27 ,is Wharf to Wharf race day, in which runners from around the globe pound the pavement along the 6 mile route between the wharfs in Santa Cruz and Capitola. As a result, the Bay Avenue/Porter Street ramp off Highway 1 will be closed from 8 a.m. to noon. The California Highway Patrol will provide traffic control.
