Tipsy Tow available for Cinco de Mayo revellers

Folks celebrating Cinco de Mayo tonight with a few cold ones can call upon AAA's Tipsy Tow program for a ride home. From 6 p.m. tonight to 6 a.m. tomorrow, participating tow companies will provide free rides home to inebriated drivers, their vehicle and any passengers they have with them as long as everyone can fit in the tow truck's cab. Rides are one-way to the driver's home only. The number to call is 800-222-4357 or AAA-HELP. Reservations are not accepted. Tipsy Tow rides are available to members and non-members alike. Drivers, passengers, bartenders and party throwers are all encouraged to use this number if needed. The goal is the save lives. As little as one drink can impair judgment, vision, steering, braking and reaction time. Citing 2012 statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, AAA reported that there were 802 drunk-driving fatalities involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of .08, representing 28 percent of all traffic deaths that year. Nationwide, more than 1.2 million drivers were arrested in 2012 for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. That's one arrest for every 165 licensed drivers in the United States. In California, AAA estimates that the cost of a first time DUI conviction can run up to $12,000 in fines, penalties, restitution, legal fees, and added insurance expenses. But to injure or take someone's life in a DUI-related crash, you can't put a price on that.
