School buses are allowed to double park to pickup, dropoff students

Dear Street Smarts, Q: I recently seen an article in your paper regarding driver's bad behavior around schools ("Street Smarts: Dealing with school zone traffic scofflaws," March 7) and wanted to clarify a statement made in the article. The statement was regarding to a school bus driver blocking a driveway. The California Vehicle Code does allow school bus drivers to block a public or private drive way to load or unload -- section 22500(e). They may also double park to load or unload as long as the posted speed limit is 25 mph or less -- vehicle code section 22500(h). Thank you, Patrishia Tice, School Pupil Transportation Safety Coordinator, California Highway Patrol, Redwood City Area A: Thank you for the clarification and continued school bus safety education.
