The right way to ride a Segway

Every once in a while I see someone riding a Segway. Sometimes I see them on the sidewalk or in a bicycle lane. But where should they ride in the eyes of the law? Both are fine. California classifies Segways as electric personal assisted mobility devices and allows them to travel on sidewalks, in bike lanes and on the road, according to Ask George, the DMV's transportation column that addresses customers' frequently asked questions. "When operating your Segway, it is important to remember that pedestrians have the right of way and you must yield to them whenever necessary," according to Ask George. "Also, though it is not required by law, you are highly encouraged to wear a helmet when operating your Segway or any other electric personal assisted mobility devices to ensure your safety."
