Navigating the Salinas Road detour off southbound Highway 1

If you plan on heading south on Highway 1 in the hopes of connecting to Salinas Road, think again. You'll have to take a detour via State Route 129 first. Caltrans has shut down access to Salinas Road as part of a $30 million project aimed at improving safety at that intersection. The detour for motor vehicles is as follows:
  • Exit at Route 129,
  • Follow Riverside Drive to Porter Drive,
  • Make a right turn onto Porter,
  • Then turn right onto Salinas Road.
The closure, which is to last through Aug. 21, does not include northbound Highway 1 traffic, yet. However, northbound Highway 1 access to Salinas Road will be impacted as soon as next week. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, bicycle riders also have no access to Salinas Road at Highway 1. There's a detour for that, as well, according to the Transportation Agency of Monterey County. Southbound cyclists can use the McGowan-Trafton-Bluff-Jensen roads route.  For the northbound closure, confident cyclists can make a left on Jensen Road, before making their way to Bluff, Trafton and McGowan on their way to Santa Cruz.
