Roundabout paving to wrap up this week

Paving of the roundabout project at Pacific Avenue and Center Street is to wrap up this week. Today (Tuesday, April 26) crews will apply a thin layer of asphalt around the concrete surface to prevent cracking, with “full blown paving” to happen Wednesday and Thursday, said Josh Spangrud, associate civil engineer for the city of Santa Cruz's public works department. “On Wednesday, we're going to pave the roundabout proper and down Pacific Avenue to the end, by Las Palmas Taco Bar,” he said. “Then, on Thursday, we'll pave West Cliff Drive over the trestle to Beach Street and the Dream Inn.” People who travel through is area should expect delays. Motorists are urged to avoid the area is possible. “The bright side is that this is the end of the destructive work,” said Spangrud. “ After this, we'll build islands for the yield and keep right signs. Landscape and hard scape plans will be going out to bid soon and this will be minimally destructive.” The paving job had been planned for last week, but it was a big spring break week, and the city did not want to interfere with beach-going traffic. On Monday, the paving project was again delayed because of the misty weather. “We want to get this done this week,” Spangrud said. In coming weeks, the city will finish paving West Cliff Drive in a separate paving project, added Spangrud. Stay tuned for more information about that project.
