Grant available for transportation agencies that provide services for seniors, disabled

Local transportation agencies that provide rides to seniors and the disabled can now apply for a grant from Caltrans. The state agency has $25 million from the Federal Transit Administration to offer grants that aim to help get people with special needs to their destinations in areas where those needs are not being met. The grant program allows private nonprofits and public agencies, under certain circumstances, to apply for funds for the purchase of accessible buses, vans or other transportation equipment. “These funds will help Caltrans fulfill its core mission of improving mobility for all Californians, including those with special needs,” said Cindy McKim, Caltrans director. “I want to thank FTA Administrator (Peter) Rogoff and all our federal partners for this assistance.” The deadline to apply for the grant is 5 p.m. March 4. Local entities who's like to apply can get more information online at For a list of all the local agencies that provide transportation services to the seniors and the disabled, visit the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission's website and check out the Guide to Specialized Transportation Services or pick up a booklet at their headquarters, 1523 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz, CA, 95060.
