Highway 9 to reopen next week

Accessing the San Lorenzo Valley is about to get easier. That's because Highway 9, a portion of which has been closed about two miles north of Highway 1 since June, is scheduled to reopen by 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1. This past summer, Gordon N. Ball of Alamo was paid $500,000 to build a retaining wall, install a new drainage system and give the road a fresh layer of asphalt concrete. “We really appreciate the public's patience and understanding during the summertime closure,” said Rich Krumholz, director of Caltrans District 5, which has jurisdiction over the Central Coast. “Ultimately, this project will result in a safer, more stable roadway for everyone.” During the closure, traffic has been using Graham Hill and Mount Hermon roads to access the San Lorenzo Valley and segments of Highway 9 north of the construction site.
