Watsonville PD to hand out road safety info cards during traffic stops

The Watsonville Police Department could soon be handing out traffic safety cards to drivers during traffic stops that do not result in a citation being written. The South County Bike and Pedestrian Work Group of the Community Traffic Safety Coalition is working with the police department on a card that would contain tips about safe driving practices, such as how to share the road with other road users. The size of the card and the exact message are still being worked out. The police department will have to sign off on those two items before the card is duplicated, laminated and given to police officers to distribute. The information on the cards will be printed in English and Spanish. The group hopes to have the cards in officers' hands in time for the Bike to Work/School Day activities on Oct. 7. The group meets again 10 -11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7 in the Watsonville Library Conference Room, 275 Main St. in downtown Watsonville. To contact the group about this or other traffic safety issues in South County, email Sarah Harmon at sarah.harmon@health.co.santa-cruz.ca.us.
