Clares Street improvements on hold, for now

Dear Street Smarts, Q: I seem to have read somewhere that Clares Street between 41st Ave nue and Wharf Road was to be repaved. Is this true and when will it begin? Thank you, Scott Newland, Soquel A: “The Clares Street Traffic Calming project was part of the Rispin Hotel project,” said Steve Jesberg, Capitola’s public works director. Ongoing delays with the hotel project have pushed back the work on Clares, he said. Now, Redevelopment Agency funds tare being looked at to pay for the improvements. But that’s not a done deal yet, said Jesberg, as the state is seeking to take about $2 billion from local redevelopment agencies to help pay for education. California’s budget deficit is an estimated $18.6 million. “If budgets remain as proposed, the project will be scheduled for construction in Spring 2011,”  he said.
