Honda tops AAA’s list of best commuter cars

AAA of Northern California has named its top nine automobiles for commuting. Honda takes up three of those spots, followed by Ford, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Subaru, Chevrolet and Mazda. Researchers for AAA drive hundreds of cars annually and the criteria they based the list on included the vehicle’s comfort, safety, practicality and ability to save its driver some cash both at purchase and at the gas pump. “Americans spend an average of 41 minutes a day commuting, according to the National Household Travel Survey,” said Cynthia Harris, spokesperson for AAA Northern California. “Having the right vehicle for those long drives is key not only to saving money and being environmentally-friendly, but also staying safe and comfortable during many hours on the road.” AAA’s top commuter car picks were:
  • Honda Insight - $20,510 - $23,810; MPG: 40 city/43 highway.
  • Ford Fusion - Hybrid: $33,890; MPG: 41 city/36 highway.
  • Volkwagen Jetta TDI (clean diesel) - $22,830; MPG: 30 city/42 hwy.
  • Hyundai Elantra - $14,145; MPG: 26 city/35 highway. Also, 10 year/100,000 mile warranty.
  • Subaru Legacy/Outback - Legacy: $19,995/Outback: $22,995; MPG: 18 city/27 highway.
  • Honda Civic - $16,165 - $27,710; Hybrid MPG: 40 city/45 highway; Gas-powered best MPG: 25 city/36highway.
  • Chevrolet Malibu - $23,535; MPG: 22 city/ 33 highway.
  • Honda Accord - $21,765 - $32,015; Best MPG: 22 city/31 highway.
  • Mazda3 – Sedan: $15,295; MPG: 21 city/33 highway. John Prentice, general manager of Ocean Honda in Soquel, was excited to hear his dealership’s product made the list three times.
“Honda has always been a very green car company and builds cars that show it,” he said. “They’re great cars and great commuter cars. They’re safe and economical. It sounds like the person who came up with this list is a very educated person.”
