More can be done to ensure pedestrian safety on Mission at Bay streets, reader says

Dear Street Smarts, Q: The last time I used the crosswalk across Mission Street by Bay Street, I noticed there is a sign on the signal button on the south side of the street explaining its function. It would be better if there were such a sign on each side of the street so one didn't have to cross the street first to read it. It would be even better if it could be understood by the many among us who do not read English, but who should not be considered expendable. I still think exposing a flashing light to the pedestrians' view would be the obvious, safe and prudent action to take. Thank you for making Santa Cruz safer! Stephan Bianchi, Santa Cruz Q: Officials with Caltrans say the city of Santa Cruz would have to make such a request before the state agency could make the changes you are requesting. I’ve forwarded your email and Caltrans’ response to the city for input. Stay tuned.

  1. It would be nice if the flashing lights could be seen to be flashing/working by pedestrians after the button is pushed.
