Reader questions phantom construction zone on Hwy 17
Dear Street Smarts, Q: I see signs this week for night construction on Highway 17 to last until January 2011 but I can't find any information about it on Caltrans’ Web site. What's going on and what are the work hours going to be? As a post-rush hour commuter, last year's repairs severely affected my commute, should I expect more of the same after such a brief respite? Josh Goldberg, Santa Cruz A: The signs you see going up this week are in regard to an upcoming guardrail project on Highway 17, said Susana Cruz, Caltrans spokeswoman. Weather permitting, trees in the work area will be removed soon, she said. “Beyond that, we will be watching the weather to determine if the job will be suspended until spring, or continue beyond tree removal,” said Cruz.
