Traffic light has gone awry, reader says

Dear Street Smarts, Q: Can you find out why the light at Union Street and Riverside Drive (in Watsonville) is always red. When I go to work around 5:30 to 6:00 a.m., there are never any vehicles or people around. Thanks. Lee Fellows, Parking Control for the County of Santa Cruz, via email A: A Caltrans traffic light engineer has gone to the site and fixed the problem. Apparently, a side street detector was putting out false calls for a green light, according to Caltrans officials. Everything should be in working order now, they said.
