Still trying to corral all the Santa Cruz Warriors players who will be competing on a Summer League team this year, but already it looks like the local D-League affiliate will be well represented.
The Las Vegas Summer League kicks off Friday and teams are still slowly releasing their rosters. What we know regarding former Santa Cruz players: Cameron Jones (Golden State), Scott Machado (Golden State), Kent Bazemore (Golden State), Lance Goulbourne (Golden State), Chris Johnson (Minnesota), Travis Leslie (Miami), Jeremy Tyler (New York), Stefhon Hannah (D-League Select) and Mickell Gladness (D-League Select) will each play in the Las Vegas Summer League.
Santa Cruz’s Casey Hill, meanwhile, will be an assistant coach for the D-League Select team.
As for the Orlando Summer League, which began on Sunday, only Travis Leslie is playing. The Univ. of Georgia product is competing with Philadelphia, although is battling through injuries.
Here’s a write-up for the newspaper:
Santa Cruz Warriors guard Stefhon Hannah and center Mickell Gladness were chosen to play on the D-League Select team at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, it was announced Monday.
Santa Cruz’s Casey Hill was named an assistant coach for the team, which will begin play Saturday against the Minnesota Timberwolves at 3:30 p.m. at the Thomas and Mac Center. Former Santa Cruz Warriors center Chris Johnson, who earned an NBA call-up with Minnesota on Jan. 19, will play on the Timberwolves’ Summer League team.
The D-League Select team, which will be head coached by Alex Jensen of the Canton Charge, is also scheduled to play the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and the Dallas Mavericks on July 16 at 7:30 p.m. The team will participate in at least two more contests as it competes for the inaugural NBA Summer League Championship.
Hannah and Gladness were two of 12 D-League prospects selected.
Hannah won the D-League’s Defensive Player of the Year award for a second straight season after averaging nearly two steals per game. The defensive-minded Gladness, meanwhile, averaged more than two blocks per contest.
+ Santa Cruz Warriors guard Travis Leslie, who is competing this week for the Philadelphia 76ers in the Orlando Summer League, is listed day-to-day with a groin injury, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Leslie, who last season averaged 15.4 points per game for the D-League Warriors, started in Sunday’s opener against the Houston Rockets but played only three minutes. He did not start in Monday’s game against the Indiana Pacers.
Leslie is also expected to compete for the Miami Heat at the Las Vegas Summer League, which begins Saturday.
+ Jeremy Tyler, who played on Golden State before joining the Santa Cruz Warriors last season, will compete with the New York Knicks at the Las Vegas Summer League.
Tyler averaged a team-high 20 points in six postseason games with Santa Cruz and 17.4 points in 12 regular-season games.
The Knicks begin play with the New Orleans Pelicans Friday at 10 a.m.
