The Trouble Gold, an 18U club team based out of Scotts Valley, qualified to the exclusive Amateur Softball Association’s Gold National Championships last weekend at the Western territorial qualifier in Stockton.
This is a pretty big accomplishment for the team, which is made up of players mostly from Scotts Valley, Watsonville, Aptos, Soquel, Harbor and Santa Cruz high schools. I can recall covering only one other club softball team that reached Gold Nationals, and that team had shortstop Jessica Vest (San Benito High) and pitcher Keilani Ricketts (Mitty) on it — both of whom were part of Oklahoma’s national championship team this season.
The Trouble Gold includes Rita McCreesh, Sigrid Holtrop, Mikal Cuellar, Kellie Linkletter and Marissa Bugayong, among others.
They went 2-0 at the qualifying tournament last weekend, defeating USA Elite (Vasiale) 7-4 and the Mize Diamonds of Los Gatos 7-0 to advance to nationals.
The national tournament, comprised of the top 64 club teams in the country, will be held July 21-27 in Clearwater, Fla.
The team is looking to raise funds for the trip. Donations can be made by calling coach Matt Houseman at 831-600-6569, or emailing: email@example.com
