Week 10 football picks

Get in, get out, get on with your life, right?

This is a fairly easy week, so I’ll keep it short.

And I say “fairly easy” knowing full well I just jinxed myself and will now go 0-6.

Last week: 5-2

Overall: 57-21

Soquel at Santa Cruz: The Knights are too strong and have too much still to play for to overlook Santa Cruz. A Soquel win (likely) and an Aptos loss (unlikely) would give the Knights a share of the SCCAL title. No matter how unlikely the Mariners’ losing is, though, the Knights still have to go all out and win this week. Because who knows what will happen. Pick: Soquel.

NMC at MVC: This is the biggest game of the week, although I’m surprised it is. MVC should have defeated Alisal last week and should have earned their 8th win, which would have reduced the importance on this week’s game. But the Trojans won, and now MVC needs to beat NMC in order to better its playoff chances — they’re currently teetering on the edge. I think they will win, too. Although NMC plays physical football, MVC’s ability to stretch the field with the pass and set up the run should equal a win for the Mustangs. Pick: MVC.

Cabrillo at Gavilan: I’d really like to see Cabrillo take on Hartnell again, wouldn’t you? … The Seahawks’ defense is on fire right now, picking off passes at will, it seems. And Gavilan likes to pass the ball, perhaps playing into Cabrillo’s hands. Will they intercept another 5 passes? The odds say no. But don’t be surprised if Cabrillo’s defensive unit sets the tone once again and forces several turnovers en route to another victory. Pick: Cabrillo.

Aptos at Harbor: I already referenced this game earlier, but Aptos has too much riding on the line for them to look past Harbor. Yes, they have a share of the SCCAL title. But do you know what’s better than a share? The whole thing! Winning the title outright! And Aptos can accomplish as much with a win over the Pirates. They can also enter the postseason on the right foot. Pick: Aptos.

Watsonville vs. Pajaro Valley: I picked P.V. last week to upset NMC. It didn’t happen. But I think this team can be solid next season. … Could they upset Watsonville? Sure, but I think what Watsonville can do offensively — with QB Eddie Mares running for 150 yards, passing for 150 yards, or both — is going to cause some problems for the Grizzlies. P.V. is going to keep pace, I think. But Watsonville will pull away in the end. Pick: Watsonville.

Scotts Valley vs. St. Francis: I think I mentioned this last week, but I feel Scotts Valley is on a bit of a mission. Yes, they struggled at the start of the season, but they have the chance to finish the season strong (which is what everyone is going to remember anyway, right?). St. Francis might be getting QB Matt Clifton and RB Jonathan Carmona back for the game, which would be huge. But so is Ari Wargon — Scotts Valley’s RB who is difficult to stop. And don’t forget the QB tandem of Garrett Johnston and Jake Lobo, who have been solid and efficient in recent weeks. Pick: Scotts Valley.
