ST. FRANCIS [0-2] AT MARINA [0-0]
TIME: 7:15 p.m. Friday.
PLACE: Monterey Peninsula College, 980 Fremont Street, Monterey.
LAST YEAR: St. Francis won, 25-7.
NOTES: St. Francis has started 0-3 only once in program history — in 2007 when it went winless on the year. It was 0-2 last season before defeating Marina, which tied the game early in the second half before the Sharks scored 18 unanswered points. Marina this year cancelled its appearance in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Jamboree as well as its first game against Santa Maria. It is coming off a bye. The Mariners are 0-17 in their first two seasons, scoring just 55 total points. This is their first game under new head coach Vernon Calhoun. “We’re trying to get our first win,” St. Francis coach Adam Hazel said. “We took a step forward last week. But our seniors, they don’t want to have steps forward. They want to win some games. We want to win some games for the seniors.” St. Francis has battled with Greenfield [35-19 L] and King City [20-13 L]. Nate Ceballos has excelled in the Sharks’ spread offense, hauling in seven passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Nick Ciandro left the game early in the second half last week and did not return. Hazel said they’re “hoping he’s good to go” on Wednesday night. Matt Clifton filled in as backup and threw a 22-yard TD pass to Ceballos, finishing 3 of 10. Jonathan Carmona has 158 yards rushing on 26 carries, exceeding the single-game century mark last week.
