SCOTTS VALLEY [1-1] AT LE GRAND [1-1]
TIME: 7:30 p.m.
PLACE: Le Grand High, 12961 East Le Grand Road, Le Grand.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
NOTES: Scotts Valley returned from Texas last week only to travel this week to Le Grand, which has gone 23-4 dating back to 2010-11. It will be the first meeting between the two teams. “They smash it at you,” Scotts Valley coach Louie Walters said. Speed was a factor last week for the Falcons, who lost 40-7 to Central. The San Angelo, Texas, school returned the opening kickoff 99 yards and never looked back. Quarterback Garrett Johnston scored Scotts Valley’s lone TD in the fourth quarter. RB Ari Wargon had 87 yards on 17 attempts. He has 298 yards on 42 carries this season. Le Grand is the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division V champion and advanced to the CIF State Division IV bowl game a year ago, losing to Sierra Canyon. The Bulldogs graduated 14 players from that team, but returned seven starters on defense, four on offense. Although its offense, led by 101 yards rushing from Ryan Martinez and 113 yards passing from Mauricio Contreras, anchored its 44-6 win over Tranquility in Week 0, it was its defense that kept them in the game during last week’s 25-10 loss to Livingston. The Bulldogs forced three second-half fumbles and had two sacks, according to the Merced Sun Star. “Defense is their strength,” said Walters, noting the Bulldogs return two linemen, three linebackers and two defensive backs.
