Prep football Power Poll, Week 2

It was a tough week for Santa Cruz County teams last week — both in the loss column and in regards to the competition.

It’s why there was little movement in this week’s power poll. We can’t knock Aptos and Scotts Valley for losing to powerhouse football teams.

Watsonville, on the other hand, made plenty of noise. Previously ranked No. 10, which was more of a result of new offense/new coach/lost a bunch of seniors [Cowans and Serrano, especially]/didn’t play in Week 0 [not that that’s a negative, just adds to the unknown], the Wildcatz opened up the season with a 44-point, 520-yard performance against Santa Cruz.

We moved them to No. 6.

Another week, another rivalry game for Watsonville, though, which will play Aptos and could shoot up the poll again with a win.

1. SOQUEL [2-0]: In two games, the Knights have outscored their opponents 42-7 in the second quarter alone. Next: vs. Seaside. Last: 1.

2. MVC [2-0]: The Mustangs’ defense opened the season with nearly 53 minutes of shutout football. Next: at Gilroy. Last: 2.

3. APTOS [0-2]: The Mariners’ wing-T attack has featured nine different ball carriers already this season. Next: vs. Watsonville. Last: 3.

4. SCOTTS VALLEY [1-1]: Falcons running back Ari Wargon is averaging more than seven yards per carry through two games. Next: at Le Grand. Last: 4.
