Soquel-SC softball game carries big league implications

Kind of a big softball game today between Soquel and host Santa Cruz.

The visiting Knights are 9-1 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League and are in the driver’s seat toward winning a third straight league championship. A win today over Santa Cruz would all but ensure another title.

But there is nobody hotter than the Cardinals (8-2) right now. They’ve won six straight league games, including a wild 1-0 victory over SLV that took nine innings to decide.

Santa Cruz is tied with SLV right now at 8-2, behind one-loss Soquel. But all of that could change with a Cardinals win today.

Soquel will play at Santa Cruz at 4 p.m.

Santa Cruz lost to Soquel 6-1 already this season, but that game came on April 12. For what it’s worth, Santa Cruz also lost to SLV earlier this season, by a 8-2 margin, only to narrowly upset the Cougars in recent weeks.

Teams improve, obviously.

And Santa Cruz is playing with a boat load of confidence since dropping SLV.

If Santa Cruz wins today, we’d have a three-way tie atop the SCCAL standings, which means the rule books and bylaws would be broken out to decide how it’s all decided. If Soquel wins, it would place the Knights a game-ahead of SLV in the loss column with just one game remaining.

Santa Cruz would drop to third place, in that scenario. In other words, plenty at stake for the Cardinals today.
