It appears the Santa Cruz High boys tennis team lost its case for qualifying to the Central Coast Section Boys Team Tennis Championships on Monday. The Cardinals aren’t listed on the 24-team bracket that was recently released.
Santa Cruz went undefeated in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League this season and finished in first place. But with too few teams in the SCCAL (Soquel was without a boys tennis program), the league itself lost its automatic berth toward the CCS Championships.
While league champions like Santa Cruz are often automatic qualifiers, the Cardinals were instead forced to petition the CCS as an at-large team.
Obviously, no dice. Head coach Dan Dewey said it was 50/50 on whether Santa Cruz would advance to CCS.
Still, as a silver lining, singles player Walker Nodine and the doubles pairing of Ben Bacher and Carl Thigpen will compete in the CCS Boys Individual Tennis Championships after each won their respective division at the SCCAL Championships.
Nodine will open the tournament against A.J. Flora of Silver Creek on Monday, May 14, at the Imperial Courts in Aptos. Bacher and Thigpen, meanwhile, will play against Leigh’s John Van Brunt and Soharb Sedeghi that same day at Imperial Courts.
