I didn’t get to witness Pacific Collegiate’s win over Castilleja — its first-ever Central Coast Section victory in which Morgan Green went for a season-high 43 points. But I did take in PCS’ following game when it played Eastside College Prep, and I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like it.
The Pumas lost the game 68-54, but the second quarter in which PCS erased a double-digit lead behind the play of Green was a lot of fun to watch. Eastside led 27-14 with 6:26 remaining in the half when the sophomore guard from PCS sparked a 19-6 run to close out the half.
Of those 19 points, Green scored 14. She was pretty much unstoppable, and she pretty much owned the gym. I can’t say I’ve ever seen any girls basketball player own the gym the way she did.
It was rather surreal, as everyone watching the game was glued to Green bringing the ball up the floor, sitting on the edge of their seats to witness what she would do next. Players from Pinewood School, which were to play the next game and could have possibly squared off against PCS in the championship had they won, were actually cheering for Green with each made basket.
And some of the baskets were pretty unbelievable. She drained one 3-pointer from several feet behind the perimeter, resulting in one of the Pinewood coaches to call it a 4-pointer.
Green was named MVP of the Coastal Athletic League when the awards were announced earlier this week, which wasn’t a surprise at all. She averaged more than 27 points per game this season for the Pumas, and led the team in rebounds, assists, blocks and steals.
Perhaps more impressive? According to stats published on maxpreps.com, Green shot 57 percent from the field this season, or 212 of 375.
