Scotts Valley resident Judy Newman and the United States tennis team dropped their first match at the ITF Seniors World Team Championships in San Diego on Wednesday, falling to Ireland 2-1 in group play.
Newman teamed up with Mariana Hollman at doubles and the pairing lost to Lesley O’Halloran and Philippa Palmer 6-1, 7-6 (5).
The US’ lone win came in singles, as Shelly Works defeated O’Halloran 6-2 6-4.
The loss puts the US at 2-1 at the end of group play and in second place. Ireland finished first in the group with a 3-0 record.
The United States now enters the fifth- through eighth-place playoff bracket. It will play against Great Britain today, while Spain and Belgium will square off in the opposite playoff.
The first- through fourth-place playoff bracket includes Ireland, South Africa, France and Germany.
