UCSC’s Mackey is blocking machine

UC Santa Cruz basketball player Sarah Mackey, a 6-foot-1 freshman from Placerville, is leading the nation in blocks per game among Division III players through Jan. 22.

In 19 games, the post player from El Dorado High has compiled 86 blocks, or 4.5 a game. Her average is only slightly ahead of Lindsay Sydness of Prinicipia, who has compiled 67 blocks in 15 games.

Mackey had a season-high 10 blocks in a single game against Chapman on Jan. 20, and also nine blocks against Holy Names on Jan. 10.
