Tonight’s boys basketball outcome between Santa Cruz and Aptos could make the SCCAL a lot more interesting, or it could just prove what many people believed coming into this season.
Although Soquel upended Santa Cruz in the Dads Club championship earlier this season, many still picked the Cardinals to win the SCCAL title this year. As it stands right now, those predictions are holding true.
But a loss by Santa Cruz tonight against Aptos could throw a wrench into that argument. The one-loss Mariners pulled out an overtime victory against Soquel recently, and sit in second place with no one but undefeated Santa Cruz in front of them.
In their first meeting, Santa Cruz won 69-48 — a game in which Walker Hansen proved difficult to stop. Hansen finished with a game-high 22 points behind 4 of 6 shooting from behind the arc in that game.
The Cardinals needed a 13-point fourth-quarter comeback on Monday to defeat Soquel, however.
Tonight’s outcome will prove to have serious implications toward a league championship. An Aptos win would tie them with Santa Cruz for first place, with two-loss Soquel just a game out. A Santa Cruz win, though, would give the Cardinals a two-game lead in the loss column over both Aptos and Soquel, with just four games remaining.
Tip-off is 7 p.m. at Aptos High.
