Power Rankings for prep basketball

There’s a new No. 1 in the girls basketball power rankings.

Soquel High takes over the top spot after Santa Cruz [previously No. 3] defeated Scotts Valley [previously No. 1] during last week’s SCCAL opener. The victory by the Cardinals moved them up to No. 2, while Soquel jumped up a spot to No. 1.

Although Scotts Valley dropped to No. 3, expect these three teams to be jockeying for supremacy for the remainder of the season.

1. Soquel [Last week: 1]: The Knights did nothing to fall from No. 1; they went 3-0 with wins over Harbor, SLV and St. Francis.
2. Santa Cruz [Last week: 2]: The Cardinals went 2-0 last week and scored a sizable 21-point victory over Aptos.
3. Watsonville [Last week: 4]: The Wildcatz moved up one spot after opening with two impressive road victories at MVC and Christopher.
4. Aptos [Last week: 3]: The Mariners’ drop from No. 3 to No. 4 is not entirely based on what they did — Aptos split its contests with Santa Cruz and Harbor — but more about what Watsonville did.
5. St. Francis [Last week: 6]: The Sharks beat SLV, which was expected, and lost by just seven points to top-ranked Soquel.
6. Monte Vista Christian [Last week: 5]: The Mustangs dropped one spot after falling at home to Watsonville in the league opener.
7. Scotts Valley [Last week: 7]: The Falcons remain at No. 7, but they had a solid week after picking up wins over Harbor and SLV.
8. Pacific Collegiate [Last week: 9]: The Pumas upended previously undefeated Trinity Christian by 20 points on Tuesday night.
