The 2011 Seascape Resort Tournament kicks off today (today!) at Aptos High School. It’s an 8-team tourney that will involve local teams Watsonville and, of course, Aptos.
Here’s the schedule:
Milpitas vs. Gilroy, 3:30 p.m.
Watsonville vs. St. Mary’s (Stockton), 5 p.m.
Liberty (Brentwood) vs. Gunn, 6:30 p.m.
Dixon vs. Aptos, 8 p.m.
The best game of the bunch? Watsonville vs. St. Mary’s.
The Wildcatz are the defending Monterey Bay League champs after they compiled a 22-6 record a year ago, and this year they expect to be as good, if not better, than last year’s team. They return point guard Lamar Cowans and post Ivo Basor, who is 6-foot-8, 230 pounds.
St. Mary’s doesn’t have anyone quite that tall — the Rams’ biggest player is 6-foot-4 senior Trevor Carlson — but they are traditionally a solid program. Last year, for instance, the Rams went 21-11 and won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship.
The tournament will pick up again Friday and Saturday, with the championship game scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m.
