All-SCCAL Football

We received the All-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League football selections last night. This should be in tomorrow’s print edition.

There were some changes this year. The coaches voted unanimously to move to a system that awarded the best players in the league, regardless of position. Hence, there are 3 quarterbacks on the first team, while Riggs Powell, also a QB, was named MVP.

This format also explains why there is 1 first team running back, and another 3 RBs who were awarded Offensive Player of the Year and Junior of the Year. The changes were done to ensure the best players were recognized.

Here are your 2011 All-SCCAL football selections:

Although I agree with some of the modification to the selection, I still see leaks in the outcome. Hopefully coaches promoted their best points with their nomations and stats can be misleading at times. The SCCAL had some outstanding running backs this year. I had the previledge to watch the top kids. Unfortuantely, the league also had some weak defense of teams. A couple of running backs that did not get the respect they deserved were Travis Dolton of Soquel and Phillip Rojas of Aptos. Both kids Yards Per Carry were amongst the leagues best( Dolton 69 car/666 yds=9.09 YPC and Rojas 115 car/936 yds=8.13 YPC). Both had limited running plays against the weaker teams(Harbor, St.Francis) and even Soquel, who gave up an average of 30 points per game. nnJust my 2 cents !!
