SENTINEL VIDEO: Counting down days at the Flea Market

On the next-to-last weekend of the Santa Cruz flea market, venders set up spots and collectors browsed, a man played an accordion and flea marketers were a little sad to see Santa Cruz tradition coming to an end. Video by Christina Gullickson.

i have lived in santa cruz my whole life and the flea market has always been a fun thing to do on the weekends. have a beer, shop , and enjoy the sunshine! now that its gone i am very sad and dissapointed that the county allowed this to happen. i hope it will relocate to a new location for all those who make a living by selling things there. and for those of us who enjoy walking around and looking at all the great stuff.. :(

I am so sad to hear that the Flea Market will be closing! I have a lot of childhood memories there. I moved to Chicago about 8 years ago and it is one of the things I miss the most! I remember getting up early on the weekend to spend a day there with my parents. It is such a shame to see such a tradition fade away.

I sell junk at the flea market and live in my small motorhome. Now what will I do? How will I stay in touch with all of my parolee friends? Damn.

I believe the public would have been better served if this institution had been left in place…Instead of more over priced health care.

R.I.P. Santa Cruz FleaMarket. I will miss you. We all will. Soooo many memorys there. Go phuck yourself sutter.

Oh, indeed it is a sad day that this institution is closing, has been a very large part of my life, both as a buyer & seller for 30+ years. As a resident of BC, I now have no reason to go to Santa Cruz at all! I’ll just go “over the hill”

I agree that the flea market will be missed by many of us. It has always been a good reason to travel from San Jose to Santa Cruz on a weekend. Good Luck to all the merchants.

Very sad, very sad. Think about the people who squeeze out a living there, and those who save a little buying there instead of downtown. Santa Cruz is evolving into Metropolis. Lower class be damned. We’ll have to buy robots to mow our lawns and vacuum our carpets. Sutter is non-profit, interesting eh?

before i retired & moved out of the area i knew i would miss 2 things, dallas dobro & the flea. now both are gone.

  • Mr. T. // Nov 17, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Before the garbage dump that existed before the drive in was built, it was an Indian burial site. I suspect that Sutter bought the wrong piece of real estate. Yep, Indian bones….lotsa Indian bones. And so it goes……

Why is the flea market closing?

  • Mike Lawson // Nov 17, 2007 at 8:48 pm

I’m really sorry to see that the flea market is closing. I live in another state now and it’s one of the things I like to brag about my home town. Whats happening to Santa Cruz?

  • Lucas // Nov 17, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Nice video. I think I saw my stolen car radio in the background.
The flea market charged me $2 to get in. I wonder what Sutter will charge?
Since Watsonville is going solar and changing zoning, planning and code compliance whenever they feel like it why don’t they dedicate the fair grounds or a strawberry field for the flea market? As a bonus, you don’t have to worry about the seedy people moving in. They are already there.

  • Lucas // Nov 17, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Do you think UCSC will step up to the plate and offer to host it there? How about Cabrillo? Or will they be as quiet as a whore in church?

sign the petion on save flea market .com

  • candy warmuth // Nov 17, 2007 at 11:08 pm

This is so wrong, PLEASE do not close the flea market. Jesus, there is always someone fucking up the best thing in town.

  • Johnnybitchin // Nov 18, 2007 at 11:49 am

Hey..I’ll miss the Flea..but nothing lasts forever. Id be looking into the Fairgrounds..makes sense..and the maybe some of the profits could go to the needy instead of a private entity. I’ll drive to Watsonville.

I’m sad about the Flea Market, but more about the Drive In closing. I’ve seen countless movies ,had some fun tailgate parties ,amazing memories throughout my life and i will always miss that place. But times are a changing, theres nothing we can do now but remember the good ol days when we could be found chillen outside with some friends a little brew and cant forget the smoke and watching a new released movie.

We’ve been going to the Flea for over 18 years. When we were able to buy our first home, we were able to find alot of furniture to furnish our house. We thoroughly enjoy our Sunday mornings browsing thru the Flea - finding both new and recycled items. We love the fresh produce aisle! We can’t believe the city of Santa Cruz isn’t doing something to preserve the Flea Market. We’re not locals. We drive almost an hour to go to the Flea Market - and we see some of our neigbhors there, too - so you know that people from everywhere come to this Flea Market. It would be soooooooo very sad to see the Flea Market days end. We hope that Sutter and the City of SC will step up to the plate and makes sure the institution of the “flea market” continues!

  • cindylou // Nov 21, 2007 at 1:18 pm

The flea will be missed, the memories made at the drive in will be cherished forever.
The 71 bus would be packed on weekends with flea people. The ride was always eventful. People with their treasures…birdcages, strollers, small furniture, bags of vegetables, record albums, and smiles.
Bye flea, thanks for the memories.
Remember the flea market they tried to have at the fairgrounds?

I am so, so sad about losing the flea market. It is definitely the best part about Santa Cruz, and I have had so many magical times there. So many of my possessions have come from there, ended up there, and passed on to others. It’s the best kind of recycling because you actually get to connect with real people and hear the stories about the stuff. It’s also a great place to people watch and overhear funny conversations! There’s nothing else that even comes close to a morning at the flea market to brighten up my day. What a loss!

  • Richard Tennesen // Nov 22, 2007 at 11:45 am

I’m confused — the video says “closing Nov. 16,” but the article in the Sentinel on Nov. 21 says “closing this weekend.” — Will it be open the weekend after Thanksgiving?

I have been a long time customer at the Flea Market for years. My family, and friends have sold out there. Anyway I hear people saying that there going to miss the Flea Market, and so on…. How about thinking about somewhere else we could have one. I know it won’t be as big, and won’t be the same, but help me out by brain storming of were we could relocate. I know people have said the Santa Cruz Fair Grounds, but people are very set in their ways. So if anyone has any ideas of were to put another one, please feel free to email me at Gustafsone12584@netscape.net

One time we had a tailgate party at the drive-in, I drove my 1968 Caddy deVille Convertible, and we barbecued fresh caught salmon out of the trunk, and had a keg in the backseat. We totally pulled it off, and it was the BEST!
