Reader expresses B40 curiosity

Dear Street Smarts,

Q: After a very long absence from Santa Cruz, my wife and I have returned and have purchased a house that’s on a corner of North Branciforte Avenue. As we drive north from Soquel Avenue, we notice that some of the street signs say Branciforte and other say N. Branciforte. We thought that ‘generic’ Branciforte was the road that begins at the end of Market Street and heads into the hills. What gives? Is part of the street we know as South Branciforte – south of Soquel Avenue – and North Branciforte – north of Soquel – also known as just plain ol’ Branciforte?

Dennis Hagen, Santa Cruz

A: That’s right, said Chris Schneiter, of the city’s public works department.
“South B40 is from Soquel to the Ocean, North B40 is Soquel to just past Goss Avenue and Branciforte Drive is that section that is in the county right past the city limits,” he said. “I don’t know if all the signs are correct, but will keep my eyes open.”
