BMW of North America is recalling 504,545 cars because a faulty battery cable can lead to loss of power to the vehicle.
The vehicles being recalled are the model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles.
BMW reports the connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time, which may cause the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance to break the connection before the power loss occurs.
This could cause the vehicle to stall unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
BMW will notify owners and dealers will make the repairs for free. The recall is to be next month.
