Stop light at Laurel, California working fine, city says

Dear Street Smarts,

Q: I drive up to UC Santa Cruz going through downtown and have noticed that when I reach the hill at Laurel and California streets, I come to a red light. In the past, I thought the lights were timed so that the light was usually green by the time I got to the hill. Has it been changed?

L. Yien, Santa Cruz

A: Regarding all those green lights you’ve gotten in the past, chalk it up to luck, a city official said. No changes have been made to the traffic light’s timing, nor have any problems been detected, said Chris Schneiter, assistant public works director.
