Bike-riding bandit to get prison time for bank robberies

Last week I reported on an admitted bank robber from Santa Cruz who will be sentenced to prison in November.

Kent Lee Maxon admitted to robbing two banks in Santa Cruz in 2009 and 2010. He also robbed two banks in Santa Cruz County, for which he was sentenced to 12 years in state prison. All four incidents involved him robbing a teller at gunpoint and then fleeing the scene….on a bicycle.

This strikes me as both quintessentially Santa Cruz and also sort of hilarious. I am not in any way suggesting that bank robberies are hilarious. Obviously, they aren’t, (unless you’re Bill Murray and the movie’s called Quick Change.) They are serious crimes for which one should be punished. But seriously, a getaway bike? The image just really amuses me….just imagine Bonnie and Clyde zipping away on a bicycle built for two.

This was my favorite reader comment on this story:

“I say let’s give this guy a pass. He has demonstrated his commitment to going green by using a bicycle as a getaway conveyance.”

Again, I am not trying to make light of the severity of Maxon’s crimes, but how could you not get a giggle out of that comment? Personally, now I’m just waiting to see how many more alternative, green-friendly getaway transport we’ll see next. Rollerskates? Scooters? The bank robber on unicyle? What about a pogo-sticking purloiner?
