The Media Lab gets Socialized, May 1st gathering at Cruzio with Joel Postman

April 30th, 2013 Tom Moore No comments

We’ve got a few open spots for tomorrow’s monthly meeting of the Santa Cruz Community Media Lab.

Joel Postman, author of the Socialized blog on social media will speak and answer questions.

Postman, from Boulder Creek, consults and provides social media strategy, implementation and measurement for progressive companies and non-profit organizations (see Bio).

The Media Lab meetings have been good opportunities for bloggers and Sentinel journalists to talk about their work and make connections. At our March gathering, Nina Simon talked about starting the Museum 2.0 blog, and the ways it changed her life. Going around the room, Media Lab bloggers talked about the way every post seemed to make another connection or another door. We hope our face-to-face meeting offer those opportunities.

We’re meeting at noon, Wednesday at Cruzio – no charge, but bring your own lunch. Send us a note (cml.santacruz@gmail.com) or check in on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/414876248611788/ if you plan to attend.

Thanks! Tom

New: Sentinel photos page

October 24th, 2012 Tom Moore No comments

We’ve added a photo page to the Sentinel website at www.santacruzsentinel.com/photos.

Digital Producer Christina Gullickson, designed and launched the page this week.

It’s built to feature our best images, and promote our Instagram account, where we have more than 1,100 followers, (display via snapwidget.com).

The page is also about sharing the wide variety of images of Santa Cruz County, and providing easy links to shots from our partners from Santa Cruz Waves, to our photo contest, to all the different ways we feature photos. We welcome submissions the community, tagged photos on Facebook and we make the most of our longtime staff photographers. Images are evolving and become a bigger part of everyone’s conversation as they are easier to share. We’re building slide shows, we’re connect to a new media center, to Flickr, Pinterest and other social accounts.

In our last gathering with the Santa Cruz Community Media Lab, we talked photography with Shmuel Thaler and were encouraged to build this kind of page.

How news organizations can benefit from Reddit

August 8th, 2012 Tom Moore No comments

We asked Sentinel Digital intern Eric Brown to write up his thoughts on Reddit and its possibilities for news organizations, specifically the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Here’s his thoughtful response (which isn’t exactly three ways news organizations can benefit from Reddit):

Breaking down Reddit and its use to the Sentinel

This is just a preliminary look into what exactly Reddit is, how its community functions, and how exactly a local news organization (specifically the Sentinel) can utilize the site.

The recent social media boom has benefited the world in lots of ways that are more serious than simply connecting with old friends. Sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr have been particularly useful to journalists when it comes to both sharing their work and sourcing new stories. This latter element is one that can tend to be overlooked by reporters who are just gaining their Twitter sea legs. Sure, social networking is a great way to get out the word about the new column you wrote, but it’s also a fantastic way to find people close to a topic or story who may otherwise have been hidden. Even if someone on Twitter or Facebook isn’t directly connected to a story they can provide useful opinions that can drive a story to new places through conversation.

That’s where the social networking site Reddit comes into play. When compared to Twitter, Reddit is a much more insular place, driven by casual anonymous interactions that rely on a significant amount of assumed respect. Reddit is comprised of message boards (called subreddits) where people still use screen names and pseudonyms to discuss their points. Subreddits can range from serious (r/politics) to nerdy (r/starwars) to flatly obscene (there are a plethora of niched porn subreddits). But what each subreddit has in common is that its moderators and members are dedicated to whatever specialized topic they may be covering. Some of the communities are large and some are small, but they all feature people with a common interest posting topical stories, videos, and pictures and then commenting about these pieces of media. Reddit uses a system of upvotes and downvotes so that the most popular posts and the most popular comments on those posts rise to the top. The site tries to emphasizes that the voting shouldn’t be based on whether readers agree – instead it should be based on the legitimacy or insight that is held by the post’s argument. On more serious subreddits like r/economics this can lead to some very thorough academic discourse.

So where does a local paper like the Sentinel fit into Reddit’s vision? The short answer is that it doesn’t, at least not in the way publications have come to conceive other social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Reddit is all about community and user driven discussion, so it is frowned upon if users repeatedly push their own content for commercial purposes. A newspaper trying to spread its stories through Reddit would be viewed with disdain by Redditors; in fact, some publications, notably The Atlantic, have been banned from Reddit after their writers tried to push their own articles. If someone posts a song they made to r/hiphopheads requesting feedback it is viewed as genuine crowdsourcing, but any amount of self-promotion (that isn’t looking for a critique or genuine discussion) is viewed negatively. Even Reddit itself has put out announcements cautioning against spamming subreddits with your own material, unless you want to get feedback, start a discussion, etc.

It would be unwise for the Sentinel to have a “scsentinel” Reddit account, because even if it wasn’t sacked immediately it wouldn’t be viewed favorably by most Redditors. However, Reddit can still serve the paper. If reporters at the Sentinel have accounts and go on the various Santa Cruz subreddits (including r/SantaCruz, r/santacruzlocals, r/scsurf, r/UCSC, r/CSUMB, r/MontereyBay) they will be able to accomplish a lot by listening to Redditors. Self-identifying as reporters could even be smart, in the context of “Hey, this topic is really interesting, I’m a reporter at the Sentinel – could we talk more about this?” Reddit is used primarily by young college students and professionals, so as the site continues to grow it could be a really valuable source in tapping into these demographics and becoming involved in local conversations that might be hard to access or understand from an office cubicle.

Great election tweets from @scnewsdude

June 6th, 2012 Tom Moore No comments

If you follow politics in Santa Cruz, care about the journalism business, or what’s happening with the county, you should follow @scnewsdude (aka Jason Hoppin) on twitter. Here’s a two-tweet summary of election day in Santa Cruz from Jason.

You’ll find Jason breaks almost all his significant reporting on twitter, hours before his story is written. We recommend reading both.

‘I was in the Sentinel’ – through Storify

May 8th, 2012 Tom Moore No comments

In the past week, we’ve noticed a good handful of people expressing good feelings, through their social media accounts, about being covered in the Sentinel. We’re going to gather together those tweets and posts and watch the collection grow over time.

For the purposes of this project, we’re probably more likely to find people who are pleased with our coverage, although we realize that’s not always the case.

Here are the 10 most viewed stories and pages from the Sentinel website in February:

  5. Police: Drunken man packs loaded gun at bar, patrons take him down
  6. Santa Cruz Police: Woman arrested three times in five days

For the month of February, we had 3,294,380 page views, up about 300,000 from January and up more than 500,000 from February 2011.

We had 449,495 unique visitors, up more than 40,000 from January and more than 65,000 from February 2011.

One of our favorite photos from the popular 'Only In Santa Cruz' contest in February.

One of our favorite photos from the popular 'Only In Santa Cruz' contest in February.

Among projects, we launched the Santa Cruz Community Media Lab – connecting with more than 90 bloggers on the landing page. But running behind that landing page, we’re connecting on twitter, facebook, google+, youtube, tumblr, and building lists, meeting face-to-face and talking about ways to get more voices heard more often in more ways.

Also in February, we’re breaking more news on twitter. Reporters Donna Jones and Jondi Gumz, relatively new to the twitter world, both went past 100 followers, as did the @santacruzfood. Reporter Jason Hoppin broke news of how much a proposed food truck bill would impact the industry in an attempt to offer better meals for kids. Hoppin broke down the data, built maps, and tweeted them to a wide audience before the story appeared in the paper.

Reporter Jessica Pasko went over 1,000 followers. All our reporters know that news breaks on twitter and that they can tweet what they’re seeing and learning directly to our home page.

In other social media, the Sentinel twitter account is approaching 5,000 followers. We’ve maxed out on 5,000 facebook friends, but we’re adding fans (2,269) and subscribers (nearly 800) daily. Our Flickr account has had more than a half million views in the past year, and we plan to make photos and video a bigger emphasis as we go forward.

Our award-winning sports staff also had one of its biggest months of web traffic, we launched a new version of the weekly Guide section, including QR codes linking smart phones to web pages. And, we’ve quietly launched news apps for Android and iPhone – much more about those soon! And finally, we put a GoPro video camera on the helmet of a roller derby ref.

Thanks for connecting with the Sentinel.
