Five things we’re doing online this week

1) We’re asking reporters to use twitter to update the site. Sports reporters are sending in their updates here using #scscore. Newsroom reporters are sending us updates here using #scsnews. Got a score or newsworthy item? You’re welcome to use the hash tags.

2) We’ve added an outside page that includes the best of our coverage from the print edition, but also a collection of video, links to the best of our outdoors photography, links to all kinds of recreation opportunities around here, live surf reports courtesy of Surfline.com, and a little twitter widget featuring the list of surfers we follow on twitter.

3) Got Daily Deals -If you’re a follower of the Sentinel on Facebook, Twitter or elsewhere, we’re making sure you have a chance to get in on the Daily Deal from local businesses. We

4) Facebook comments: Facebook has added a few features to their commenting system, including opportunities to login through Yahoo! or Hotmail. We feel like the tools they’re offering make it a good alternative to Disqus, which despite a lot of effort, didn’t cooperate with our content management system.  We’ll revisit the commenting system when our content management system is upgrated (sometime this year is the expectation). We actually really like Disqus, if we could make it work. It’s pretty seamless with our WordPress blogs.

5) We’re shooting video of a couple amazing stunts to be performed this weekend at the Boardwalk. Look for it on Saturday night.

why is it that my posts don’t stay on line after i log out?

i post as “waterstealer fromsoquelcreek” i have never violated tos and think that it is pretty cruddy that i cant share my opinion or that i am being censored!

How about coming clean about something I believe the Sentinel has been doing online for a while: censoring those with whom they disagree using the Facebook’s moderation tools. I’m not talking comments that violate the Sentinel commenting policy. The possible exception might be the last condition, “repost Content that was deleted” when the post doesn’t violate any of the other conditions. How would a person even know why a comment wasn’t there since the Sentinel doesn’t acknowledge its censorship?nnI’d like to know why I am on the Sentinel’s banned list, who put me there, and what was the justification for the ban? I’d like to know the same about any others that are banned. I’d also like to know if there is a shared blacklist among newspapers and, if so, which newspapers? nnWhat’s particularly insidious about a website administrator (or anyone given those rights) banning users with Facebook’s comment moderation tools is the lack of transparency. The banned user still sees his or her comments. It’s just that others don’t. So most users banned won’t even realize it. nnIt’s your website and you can do anything you want. You don’t have to allow an open debate in reader comments just as in the publication itself. The question I have is whether a newspaper, which make it their business to look into the lives and business of other, is going keep hidden what they do in that regard to users of its website or at least own up to its own actions?

Disabuser, I don’t think you’ve been banned. Let’s figure out what’s going on. E-mail me at tmoore@santacruzsentinel.com this afternoon, or whenever it’s convenient, and we’ll work on it. – Tom

I haven’t been able to post by logging in through Yahoo. I went to the Facebook developer page to see whether that would help me figure out what’s wrong, but no dice. u00a0When I try to post a comment by clicking on “post using Yahoo”, I can watch the address line switch from Yahoo to Facebook, and then back to the story page. u00a0Nothing posts, and my text remains in the comment box. u00a0This happens even if I go to Yahoo and sign in there first.nnDefinitely not censorship, but a frustrating glitch in the system. u00a0I can imagine all of the old chatterboxes from the Disqus days exploding one of these days when The Sentinel u00a0gets an especially juicy story and they can’t comment. u00a0
