Lockheed Fire: A year later

Our reporting staff is working on several stories about the Lockheed Fire as we approach the 1-year anniversary. My memory from behind this screen was an incredible outpouring and sharing of community information through the Sentinel website.

Early Saturday morning, we had a hard time getting immediate information from officials and from our staff reporters, so we opened a live conversation window, allowing neighbors and officials to share their experiences through the night.

The result was more than 2,000 comments on this message board, with many people staying through the duration of the fire, posting updates at all hours. We asked readers of the conversation to help us with our map, and we got great response, and one reader who collaborated to help us keep it updated with the latest fire boundaries. The map drew more than 800,000 views.

Our stories tomorrow will help share the human story of the neighbors affected by the fire and how they are doing a year later. From a newsroom and online perspective, it showed us ways that the community can help shape and contribute to live coverage of news events.

Our online coverage included  stunning  photos, video and staff-written stories that were updated round the clock.

Here’s a look back at that live community conversation from a year ago:

It appears we have a prime example of the benefits from the fire and the subsequent rapid recovery allowing new growth especially redwood saplings which need fire to begin the germination stages also provided a means to alleviate the massive amounts of overgrowth of ground cover “junk brush” which was the result of a century of unnatural aggressive fire suppression efforts! Proof positive our century long attempt to stop every fire is poor forest management and very unhealthy to the environment! Manageable orderly foresting and clear burns do have a benefit. I wonder how long it takes the idiots in government influenced by the whacko environmentalists to get around to admitting their ignorance and their agenda has been totally in err?

I must be the only one that thinks its a little fishy. that lockeed martin can make a missle hit a target on the other side of the world. yet they cannot pinpoint how this fire started. c’mon if you or I even go near that place we would be noticed long before we arrived at the gate. its a cover up of some kind these investigators are professinals they are great at what they do. they can find a match or a cigarett butt or a note someone carelessly burned. all i am trying to say is we need to wake up and look a little closer at the real story and come up with an answer even if its one that has been covered up.
