[...] Susan asks…The greatest college basketball team in your favorite team's history?Which year, and why are they the best? For me, it's either 1968 Bruins or 1972 Bruins. Both were coached by the legendary John Wooden of course. Heck, those teams had arguably the top 2 greatest college basketball players of all time, Lew Alcindor (Later Kareem Abdul Jabbar) and Bill Walton. Alcindor was surrounded by the likes of Edgar Lacey (A defensive specialist), Lucius Allen, Mike Lynn, Lynn Shackelford, Ken Heitz. Walton was surrounded by the likes of Henry Bibby (Mike Bibby's dad), Keith Wilkes (Later Jamaal Wilkes, he had good career in NBA, won 4 NBA titles and ROY), Swen Nater (Walton's back up), Greg Lee (Walton had nothing but praise for this guy), David Meyers (brother of Hall of Famer Ann Meyers, who was an all-time great in women's basketball. Ann later married Don Drysdale) Imo, the Walton's team were deeper, that's why I have them as the best UCLA team of all time. So what about your team?Brian answers:Well, I'm a Rutgers grad, so the best team in R.U. History had to be the 1976 team, which advanced to the final four. That year, the team went 31-0 and reached the final four (in Philadelphia I believe). They played Michigan in the semi-finals, and lost (they lost big, I think 86-70 was the final). Michigan advanced to the finals where they lost to Bobby Knights undefeated Indiana team. In 1976 Indiana, of course, was the last team to go undefeated and win a nation title in men's basketball. Rutgers finished 31-2. They lost to UCLA in the consolation game as well. Indiana beat the defending champion UCLA (in the first year after Wooden's retirement) in the other semi-final. Btw, had Rutgers managed to get past Michigan in the semi-finals, the finals would have been a battle of unbeaten teams. I grew up being a fan of Wooden and UCLA, and it's tough to pick between the '68 and '72 teams. You can flip a coin on that one. Certainly they never faced anything like each other during their seasons. The '68 team lost one game, to Houston 71-69 (I think that was the score), but then crushed Houston 101-69 in the National Semifinals. NOTE: Speaking of the "Doctors of Dunk" (the Louisville 1980 team, which was a fun team to watch), Rutgers had a player named James Bailey (a freshman on the '76 final four team). The dunk was re-instituted into college and high school basketball after a 10 year absence. Bailey proceeded to record 88 dunks as a sophomore, 116 as a junior, and 79 as a senior (double and triple teamed a lot). He was famous for converting alley-oop dunks, sometimes on passes from half court. He was an incredibly explosive leaper. Bailey was drafted by the then-defending champion Sonics in 1979, he had a good soph season (14 ppg) and a couple of other years in double figure scoring, but had just a so-so NBA career. A guy like that would be much better suited for today's NBA, which is much more like streetball than it was when Bailey was playing. TRIVIA: Henry Bibby (1972 UCLA Bruins) became the second player ever to win an NCAA title one year, and an NBA title the next year ('72 UCLA, 73 Knicks). Bill Russell (USF 56, Celtics 57) was the first. Later, Magic Johnson (Mich St 79, Lakers '80) became the third player to do that, and Billy Thompson (Louisville '86, Lakers '87) became the 4th.Lizzie asks…Which school has the best basketball program EVER?I say Tennessee for women's hoop and UCLA for men's. If you add up the number of Final Fours and number of championships for these schools, it's tough to beat them!Brian answers:Hands down - U.C.L.A. - Under John Wooden they were nearly unstoppable. Winning several consecutive titles, had an 88-game win streak. It will be a long, long time before any other team comes close, if EVER.James asks…The fall of the big 12??????Travel NCAA football consists of just 12 games in 13 weeks. But let's face it, it's not all about football. There are other sports to consider. For example, the Texas Longhorn baseball team played over 50 games against over 20 opponents. The farthest they traveled was Columbia, Mo., which is 800 miles by road. Imagine when they have to play the Washington Huskies. That's around 2,100 miles. That's a long way to go for a baseball game. Throw in men's basketball, track and field, swimming and diving, golf, and tennis, plus women's basketball, softball, tennis, volleyball, rowing, track and field, and all the others, and you've inconvenienced the entire athletic division. Not to mention the parents and fans. In the SEC, the driving distance would be around 1,000 miles tops, and that's to Gainesville, Fla. Weather It's damn cold in the Pacific Northwest and Big Ten territory October through December. Do you really want to send all those Southern boys, family, and fans to sit in an open stadium with a -10 degree windchill factor? There's a reason the good bowl games are held in the South and California. It's warm. Joining the Big Ten or the Pac-10 only puts your football team at a disadvantage when it comes to away games. Geography Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Pac in Pac-10 stand for Pacific? Good luck moving Texas and Oklahoma to the left coast. You'd be forever the outsider in the Pac-10. But the jokes should be good. The Big Ten is no better. Let's not forget our roots here. We're Southerners. We belong down South. The deeper the better. Imagine the influx of carpetbaggers when the Big Ten Network starts airing your games. If for no other reason, consider geographical pride when choosing which conference to join. Recruiting Texas is already losing top recruits to the SEC. Always have and always will. Do you want to start losing even more to the Pac-10 and Big Ten schools? Because it will happen. You may start losing even more recruits to the SEC if the kids don't want to play in the other two conferences. Competition Do you really want to be stuck playing a crippled USC, the Arizonas, UCLA, either Washington team, Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Ohio? If so, you'll be the new bully on the block. Your teams will only get better by playing Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee, Auburn, and South Carolina. Four of these teams have won BCS championships. Prestige The Big 12 South has always been under the impression that they were in the best conference, period. Except for one pesky fact: That honor goes to the SEC. Well, now you have your chance. If the Big 12 South is indeed that strong, then prove it in the conference that has won half of all the BCS championships, including the last four. This is your chance to man up. Tommy Tuberville Who wouldn't want to see coach Tuberville get another shot at Nick Saban? I don't care what anybody says, if Tuberville had gotten a seventh straight win against Alabama, Gene Chizik would still be in Iowa. Better yet, Tommy Tuberville vs. Auburn. Imagine the hype surrounding that game. It would become an automatic rivalry that could last beyond Tuberville's tenure at Texas Tech. Who in the SEC wouldn't watch that game? Conclusion Money isn't everything. Well, maybe to some. But I say let's get above that fray. If there is going to be a conference realignment, let's do it to make football better. Better for the athletes, better for the parents, better for the fans. And who's to say that with the addition of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Baylor, the SEC wouldn't be the king of the machine that drives college sports these days? What do you think? Is the fall of the big 12 good or bad? To me, it is bad. Weather, Extra money being poured out. The Conferences were made so that colleges would be is a close distance for games. This is just completely stupid. Then they're thinking about going into a Playoff system? Wtf. VERY TRUE! The time zones will mess with the games, true fans like me would love to see. True, why have a "super conference" when the only "good" team in the pac 10 the past few years have been a troubled USC program and a soon to be troubled Oregon program. And look at the big 12. Team ranked # 2 Texas Tech ranked in the top 10 in 09 or 08 Oklahoma always making it to a bowl game Oklahoma St. Coming up, they played great this past season!! And Jesus, look at how well Nebraska did against Texas. The Big 12 was right up there with the SEC, now what were playin with troubled Programs.Brian answers:Like the articleLaura asks…What are the longest NCAA winning streaks?I saw on ESPN that the Penn State women's volleyball team tied the UCLA men's basketball winning streak which is the 4th longest in NCAA history. So i was wondering what the 3 longest are (sport, school, years)?Brian answers:NCAA All-Time Division I Consecutive Victories (All games, no ties) 1. 137, Miami (Fla.) men’s tennis, 1957-64 2. 92, North Carolina women's soccer, 1990-94 3. 89, Stanford women's tennis, 2003-07 4. 88, UCLA men's basketball, 1971-74 4. 88, Penn State women's volleyball, 2007-presentKen asks…Which Universities should I apply to?Where should I apply? I'm currently a sophomore in high school, and I am primarily interested in USC, UCLA, Caltech, Georgetown, Harvey Mud, Boston College, Boston University, Tufts and Pepperdine. Freshman year: I had a 2.6 GPA first semester. I'm not trying to make and excuse but the reasons why I did so bad is because my parents were getting a divorce and other personal problems. But surprisingly I was able to raise my GPA to a 3.76 second semester. Sophomore year: I had a 3.75 first semester and I currently have a 3.95 I had to write a resume for my english composition class so here are my extra curricular activities: Sophomore year: Founded the Science Club; served as president; ran a science month that consisted of games testing students’ knowledge. Captain of the JV Soccer team; won bronze medal Member of the JV Volleyball team; won bronze medal Traveled for the second time during spring break to Philippines with the Habitat for Humanity Club to build houses for the poor. Coached basketball team for 8-12 years old. Freshman year: Participated in the school spring production Grease and played the teacher. Created an exhibition about the Korea and Shilla for the school’s history museum. Traveled during spring break to Philippines with the Habitat for Humanity Club to build houses for the poor. Attended Cushing summer session 2007 and 2008. Did math and English Attended Philips Exeter Academy summer session 2009, classes taken: geometry, Conversational French and Creative Writing Ok and a little more about me, I am from Saudi Arabia and I attend the American International School in Riyadh. I am trilingual and I have a passion for music. I have been playing the piano since I was 5, guitar since I was 8 and cello since I was 11. Where I come from women are treated as second class citizens and my family played a huge part in the Saudi government trying to fight for women's rights. Many of the reformed laws were created by my grandfather and my father so I have a lot of knowledge about the world. This might be irrelevant but I thought it might reflect on my character somehow. Next year I am going to join the IB full diploma and my classes are: HL Biology HL English HL History SL Business and Management SL Mathematics SL Arabic I am a year behind in math (I'm supposed to be in Algebra II but I'm in Geometry) but I am good at math will this hurt me a lot? Bailey proceeded to record 88 dunks as a sophomore, 116 as a junior, and 79 as a senior (double and triple teamed a lot). He was famous for converting alley-oop dunks, sometimes on passes from half court. He was an incredibly explosive leaper. Bailey was drafted by the then-defending champion Sonics in 1979, he had a good soph season (14 ppg) and a couple of other years in double figure scoring, but had just a so-so NBA career. A guy like that would be much better suited for today’s NBA, which is much more like streetball than it was when Bailey was playing. TRIVIA: Henry Bibby (1972 UCLA Bruins) became the second player ever to win an NCAA title one year, and an NBA title the next year (’72 UCLA, 73 Knicks). Bill Russell (USF 56, Celtics 57) was the first. Later, Magic Johnson (Mich St 79, Lakers ‘80) became the third player to do that, and Billy Thompson (Louisville ‘86, Lakers ‘87) became the 4th.Lizzie asks…Which school has the best basketball program EVER?I say Tennessee for women’s hoop and UCLA for men’s. Winning several consecutive titles, had an 88-game win streak. It will be a long, long time before any other team comes close, if EVER.James asks…The fall of the big 12??????Travel NCAA football consists of just 12 games in 13 weeks. But let’s face it, it’s not all about football. There are other sports to consider. For example, the Texas Longhorn baseball team played over 50 games against over 20 opponents. The farthest they traveled was Columbia, Mo., which is 800 miles by road. Imagine when they have to play the Washington Huskies. That’s around 2,100 miles. That’s a long way to go for a baseball game. Throw in men’s basketball, track and field, swimming and diving, golf, and tennis, plus women’s basketball, softball, tennis, volleyball, rowing, track and field, and all the others, and you’ve inconvenienced the entire athletic division. Not to mention the parents and fans. In the SEC, the driving distance would be around 1,000 miles tops, and that’s to Gainesville, Fla. Weather It’s damn cold in the Pacific Northwest and Big Ten territory October through December. Do you really want to send all those Southern boys, family, and fans to sit in an open stadium with a -10 degree windchill factor? There’s a reason the good bowl games are held in the South and California. It’s warm. Joining the Big Ten or the Pac-10 only puts your football team at a disadvantage when it comes to away games. Geography Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the Pac in Pac-10 stand for Pacific? Good luck moving Texas and Oklahoma to the left coast. You’d be forever the outsider in the Pac-10. But the jokes should be good. The Big Ten is no better. Let’s not forget our roots here. We’re Southerners. You may start losing even more recruits to the SEC if the kids don’t want to play in the other two conferences. Competition Do you really want to be stuck playing a crippled USC, the Arizonas, UCLA, either Washington team, Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Ohio? If so, you’ll be the new bully on the block. Tommy Tuberville Who wouldn’t want to see coach Tuberville get another shot at Nick Saban? I don’t care what anybody says, if Tuberville had gotten a seventh straight win against Alabama, Gene Chizik would still be in Iowa. Better yet, Tommy Tuberville vs. Auburn. Imagine the hype surrounding that game. It would become an automatic rivalry that could last beyond Tuberville’s tenure at Texas Tech. Who in the SEC wouldn’t watch that game? Conclusion Money isn’t everything. Well, maybe to some. But I say let’s get above that fray. If there is going to be a conference realignment, let’s do it to make football better. Better for the athletes, better for the parents, better for the fans. And who’s to say that with the addition of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Baylor, the SEC wouldn’t be the king of the machine that drives college sports these days? What do you think? Is the fall of the big 12 good or bad? To me, it is bad. Weather, Extra money being poured out. The Conferences were made so that colleges would be is a close distance for games. This is just completely stupid. Then they’re thinking about going into a Playoff system? Wtf. VERY TRUE! The time zones will mess with the games, true fans like me would love to see. True, why have a “super conference” when the only “good” team in the pac 10 the past few years have been a troubled USC program and a soon to be troubled Oregon program. And look at the big 12. Team ranked # 2 Texas Tech ranked in the top 10 in 09 or 08 Oklahoma always making it to a bowl game Oklahoma St. Coming up, they played great this past season!! And Jesus, look at how well Nebraska did against Texas. The Big 12 was right up there with the SEC, now what were playin with troubled Programs.Brian answers:Like the articleLaura asks…What are the longest NCAA winning streaks?I saw on ESPN that the Penn State women’s volleyball team tied the UCLA men’s basketball winning streak which is the 4th longest in NCAA history. Heck, those teams had arguably the top 2 greatest college basketball players of all all team in your favorite team’s history?Which year, and why are they the best? For me, it’s either 1968 Bruins or 1972 Bruins. Walton was surrounded by the likes of Henry Bibby (Mike Bibby’s dad), Keith Wilkes (Later Jamaal Wilkes, he had good career in NBA, won 4 NBA titles and ROY), Swen Nater (Walton’s back up), Greg Lee (Walton had nothing but praise for this guy), David Meyers (brother of Hall of Famer Ann Meyers, who was an all-time great in women’s basketball. Ann later married Don Drysdale) Imo, the Walton’s team were deeper, that’s why I have them as the best UCLA team of all time. So what about your team?Brian answers:Well, I’m a Rutgers grad, so the best team in R.U. In 1976 Indiana, of course, was the last team to go undefeated and win a nation title in men’s basketball. Rutgers finished 31-2. They lost to UCLA in the consolation game as well. Indiana beat the defending champion UCLA (in the first year after Wooden’s retirement) in the other semi-final. Btw, had Rutgers managed to get past Michigan in the semi-finals, the finals would have been a battle of unbeaten teams. I grew up being a fan of Wooden and UCLA, and it’s tough to pick between the ‘68 and ‘72 teams. You can flip a coin on that one. Certainly they never faced anything like each other during their seasons. The ‘68 team lost one game, to Houston 71-69 (I think that was the score), but then crushed Houston 101-69 in the National Semifinals. NOTE: Speaking of the “Doctors of Dunk” (the Louisville 1980 team, which was a fun team to watch), Rutgers had a player named James Bailey (a freshman on the ‘76 final four team).
[...] Paul asks…basketball drills for point guards?i want to be a better guard so any ball handling drills/tips and PG drills/tips in general? thanks!Brian answers:The best drill you can do as a point gaurd is to sit back in a chair and visualize how you want to control a game. Are you going to drive the lane all the way to the base line then bring it back out front like Nash or are you going to pick and roll like Stockton. Drive the lane when you are practicing by yourself and as you drive visualize all the different things you could do with the ball. Pass to the wing position for a long jumper. Bounce pass inside for a slam......maybe lay up a tear drop for two The point gaurd is the best player on the team as far as getting everyone involved.Thomas asks…What are some drills for guards in basketball?Brian answers:For ball handling: suicides but with the ball (once you are good with one hand do it with two balls.) remember to go backwards with one ball go trought your legs but behind like right to left. Handle the ball under you knees low. Shooting: the chair shooting drill take a lot of shot game speed start from the mid court line and run as fast as you can catch the ball shoot and return quick to the midcourt line bakcwards then go again catch and shoot and on and on after ever drill take a break by taking from 3 to 5 free throws youll be tired so in games you will be used to shooting tired. I hope this helpsLinda asks…Basketball dribbling drills for a point guard?I need new TOUGH, HARD dribbling drills for a advanced point guard. Thanks!Brian answers:2 ball dribbling drills. Go up and down the court pounding the ballS, then alternating pounding, zig zag, but when you do bounce the balls to the opposite hand. Dribble the two balls and go behind the back with one and switch the other ball to the other hand. Same thing but with between the legs.Sandra asks…Good Guard drills for High School Basketball?I assistant coach our high school basketball team and every day I get the guards...even though I have never been a guard. So I am limited in what I know. Obviously dribbling drills and passing drills. We do a box out drill...shooting drills, and a drill for diving on loose balls. Other than that I"m out. HelpBrian answers:Guards can do stutter steps, crossovers, spin moves. Practice fastbreaks.Daniel asks…Basketball drills for a 1 or a 2?Im going out for 1 and/or a 2 (Point guard, shooting guard)? what are some drills i can do when its raining in my garage? and what are somes drills i could do when it not raining when its outside? Also what are some things to do to increase my vertical and my ball handling? i can go under the legs, around the back and so on.Brian answers:You dont even have to go into your garage, if you are playing a 1 or a 2 then you will have the ball in your hands alot. Carry the ball around the house with you and keep it in your hands to get a realy good feel for it, and even try some dribble moves next to some expensive vases or something so that you are realy careful with what you do, and when ur on the court let it rip!Powered by Yahoo!
To the Santa Cruz High Baseball team; congratulations on a terrific season; you all played like champions.

I've known most of those boys since 7th grade, and they are remarkable young men. They represented their school and our city with great dignity, and we're all proud of you guys!
