Santa Cruz Warriors will adjust without Travis Leslie

Anytime you lose your leading scorer AND your leading rebounder, it’s going to take time to adjust.

The Santa Cruz Warriors lost Travis Leslie from their lineup on Sunday — officially, at least; he didn’t play in Friday or Saturday’s games. The 6-foot-4 guard, who was called up to the NBA by the Utah Jazz over the weekend, led the Warriors with 16.1 points and 7.4 rebounds this season.

But while Leslie’s services will be sorely missed in Santa Cruz, the team has had to adjust without him before. Leslie suffered a groin injury earlier this season and sat out eight games in which the Warriors went 5-3 — with two of those losses on the road, where Santa Cruz hasn’t played as well as it has at home.

Coupled with the two games Leslie sat out over the weekend, in which Santa Cruz went 2-0, the Warriors are actually 7-3 without their All-Star guard this season.

For the Warriors, it’s a next-guy-up mentality, which is what it has to be when playing in the D-League. They previously lost Chris Johnson to the NBA, and have seen Hilton Armstrong, Mickell Gladness and Taylor Griffin step up inside on both offense and defense (Gladness, especially, on the defensive side).

Guard Darington Hobson took Leslie’s starting spot this past weekend, and he led the team in assists one night, rebounds on the other night.

“The roster changes so much,” Santa Cruz coach Nate Bjorkgren said. “Whether it’s an assigned player or a guy gets called up, you’ve got to keep playing the system and plug the next guy in.”

“It’s something that we’re used to,” he later added.

In the 10 games without Leslie, Santa Cruz had five different leading scorers, including Cameron Jones in four of those games. Jones led the team in scoring in both games without Leslie this past weekend.

The recent addition of Scott Machado, meanwhile, could help Santa Cruz’s inside game. Bjorkgren called Machado a “big-time assist guy who will help us get into the paint and create.”

Machado, a 6-foot-2, 206-pound guard who averaged 10.3 points and 6.1 assists in 18 games with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, has NBA experience and D-League experience.

He was a standout at Iona College, where he led the nation in assists last season (327).

It will be interesting to see what the Warriors do, if anything, with their roster in the near future. They currently have 10 players on their roster, which is the max for the active roster. Teams are also allowed up to two spots for inactive players, though, and the Warriors don’t have anyone on their inactive list.

In other words, everyone on the roster is active — which might be the first time this season that’s happened for Santa Cruz (not sure, but I’ll look into it).

Report: Utah Jazz expected to sign Travis Leslie

Multiple reports this afternoon, including Alex Kennedy with HoopsWorld/USA Today and Marc Spears with Yahoo Sports, say the Utah Jazz are expected to sign Santa Cruz Warriors guard Travis Leslie.

Alex Kennedy: The Utah Jazz have called up Travis Leslie from the D-League, according to sources close to the situation.

Marc Spears: Jazz expected to sign D-League Santa Cruz Warriors guard Travis Leslie, a source told Y! Sports.

There was no comment by the Warriors, but with the amount of smoke, it seems likely Leslie will eventually get called up (no surprise) to the NBA. He was named No. 1 on the D-League’s Prospect Watch early on Friday.

And if it is, in fact, the Jazz, the announcement could come as early as Saturday but more likely on Monday.

Leslie, who won the D-League All-Star Game’s MVP award earlier this month, was still in Santa Cruz on Friday night. He didn’t play during the Warriors’ 86-64 victory over the Sioux Falls Skyforce, and was listed as a non-participant for personal reasons.

He would likely be signed to a 10-day contract with the Jazz, but the problem with doing that Saturday is Utah is currently playing in New York. If they signed him Monday, he could instead fly to Utah for its home game against Detroit and could begin a 10-day contract without jet lag.

Chris Johnson, if you remember, had a similar situation. Rumors swirled of his departure after he sat out of the Warriors’ game on a Friday night (when the Timberwolves didn’t have a game), was announced as a call-up by Minnesota on Saturday morning, and played in the team’s game that night.

As for the Warriors, this is a pretty big blow, but one they should be able to bounce back from (much like how they have without Chris Johnson in the lineup).

Leslie was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.1 points and 7.4 rebounds in 27 minutes. The team was able to win Friday night, and they’ll have another game to adjust against last-place Idaho on Saturday (even though the Stampede has had the Warriors’ number this season).

Rockhold-Belfort officially official for UFC on FX 8

Santa Cruz’s Luke Rockhold will make his UFC debut against Vitor Belfort in a headlining bout for UFC on FX 8 on Saturday, May 18, the promotion announced on Wednesday.

Of course, this bout was first reported by the website Tatame last month. But the UFC sent out a press release Wednesday and posted it on its website, so now it’s REALLY set in stone.

Here’s the release:

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to Brazil for the second time in 2013 on May 18, as the Jaragua Arena in Jaragua do Sul, Santa Catarina, will host UFC on FX 8: Rockhold vs. Belfort. In the main event, MMA legend Vitor Belfort returns to the Octagon after his victory in January at UFC Sao Paulo, where he knocked out Michael Bisping. Belfort faces Luke Rockhold, the outgoing middleweight champion of Strikeforce, who rides a series of nine wins.

In the co-main event, former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo “Jacare” faces Cypriot Constantinos “Costa” Philippou.

Seven other fights have been confirmed for the event, all of them featuring Brazilian stars squaring off against competitors from around the world:

Cezar “Mutante” Ferreira vs. CB Dollaway – middleweight
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Evan Dunham – lightweight
Francisco “Massaranduba” Trinaldo vs Mike Rio – lightweight
Paulo Thiago vs. Lance Benoist – welterweight
John Lineker vs Azamat Gashimov – flyweight
Fabio Maldonado vs. Roger Hollet – light heavyweight
Gleison Tibau vs. John Cholish – lightweight

“This is the fourth Brazilian state that we have the joy of visiting and another great achievement for the UFC,” said Grace Tourinho, spokesperson for UFC in Brazil. “Brazilian fans still have many good things to expect from us in 2013, including live events, the next season of The Ultimate Fighter Brasil and the opening of a UFC headquarters in the country.”

“Fighting in Brazil is always very good, and I’m honored to fight in the third different state in my country,” said Belfort, who will be looking to earn his fourth win in his home country.

CIF state brackets announced; Soquel boys, St. Francis girls earn home games

The CIF State Basketball Championship brackets for boys and girls basketball were released Sunday and four Santa Cruz County teams qualified, including both the Soquel and Santa Cruz boys, and the Pacific Collegiate and St. Francis girls.

Soquel and St. Francis each earned home games in the first round, while Santa Cruz and PCS will be on the road.

Here are the matchups. All first-round games are on Wednesday at 7 p.m.:

BOYS
Division III
No. 12 Santa Cruz (19-11) AT No. 5 Sir Francis Drake (24-6)
The Cardinals, who fell to Burlingame 54-51 in the Central Coast Section final on Saturday, will hit the road Wednesday night to take on the champions of the Marin County League of the North Coast Section.

Lucky for Santa Cruz, the trip to San Anselmo is less than two hours (probably more with traffic, though).

Drake lost in the NCS’ D-III semifinals to Bishop O’Dowd by a 69-46 margin. The fact that the Pirates are the 5-seed and earned a home game shows how much more respect the NCS has than the CCS.

According to stats provided by MaxPreps, Drake has three players who averaged more than 10 points per game this season. Senior Liam Hunt, who is listed at 6-foot-7, led the team with 12.1 ppg.

Of the 14 players on their roster, the Pirates have six players either 6-foot-2 or above.

Santa Cruz looked solid in its game against Burlingame. They struggled in the second quarter, when the Panthers went on a 14-0 run, but nevertheless fought back only to lose by three points.

The winner of the game will play Saturday against either No. 4 Sierra of Manteca (27-5) or No. 13 Shasta of Redding (15-12).

BOYS
Division IV
No. 4 Soquel (22-7) VS. No. 13 Colfax (24-6)
Soquel is fresh off a fifth-place finish in the CCS Open Division playoffs. Guaranteed a spot in the NorCal playoffs as a result, the Knights will host the champions of the Pioneer Valley League of the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Colfax lost in the SJS Div. IV semifinals to Liberty Ranch 64-59, although it had won seven staight games prior to that defeat.

Colfax and Soquel have one common opponent: Palma. The Chieftains beat Colfax 71-24, then beat the Knights 49-45 five days later. That was in December, though.

Colfax has some height, including 6-foot-7, Will Buell. They’ll be making roughly a 3 1/2-4 hour trip to Soquel.

Soquel, like Santa Cruz, is probably playing its best basketball right now. The Knights looked tough to beat in the Open Division; they gave Mitty perhaps its biggest challenge of the tournament.

Based on the seeds, a Soquel win Wednesday at home would give them a home game during Saturday’s second round as well.

GIRLS
Division V
No. 5 St. Francis (16-12) VS. No. 12 Turlock Christian (24-5)
While the records are contrasting, St. Francis is coming off its first-ever CCS title on Friday night when it beat PCS. Turlock Christian, meanwhile, is champions of the Southern League of the SJS. It lost in the SJS Div. V semifinals to Capital Christian 60-40.

The Eagles are led by Halie Bergman’s 26.9 ppg, according to MaxPreps. No other player averaged more than 10 points per game for Turlock Christian, which will make about a two-hour drive to Watsonville.

The Sharks avenged a prior loss to PCS in the CCS final. They looked much improved from the beginning of the season behind the play of Lauren Price, Sonja Shumake and others.

The winner will either play No. 4 International of San Francisco (28-4) or No. 13 Weed (21-9).

GIRLS
Division V
No. 10 PCS (24-5) AT No. 7 Durham (22-6)
Pacific Collegiate’s comeback effort against St. Francis fell just short in the CCS final, leading to the Pumas playing on the road to open the NorCal playoffs.

They’ll have to travel to Durham, which is a little more than four hours away.

The Trojans were champions of the Sacramento Valley League of the Northern Section, then won the D-V section title. Durham has won 13 straight games, according to MaxPreps.

Stephanie Husa was their leading scorer during the regular season with 13.3 points per game, according to MaxPreps.

The winner will play No. 2 Valley Christian of Dublin (30-2) in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
