Notes from SLV-SC softball

So throw Santa Cruz’s name into the SCCAL title hat — however improbable that may sound. Remember, this is a team that was 1-8 to start the season.

The Cardinals, winners of three straight, pulled off an impressive 1-0 win over nine innings against SLV on Tuesday. The win positions Santa Cruz a half-game ahead of SLV for second place in league, although the Cardinals have played one more game in league than the Cougars.

Both teams trail Soquel, which remains undefeated in the SCCAL.

Tuesday’s game seemed to go beyond the normal pitcher’s duel that we sometimes see in softball. It started off quick — I think it was the fourth inning some 30 minutes into the game — but then turned into a back-and-forth with scoring opportunities where each team had its chances.

Santa Cruz’s Alex Scott and SLV’s Mariah Lindberg were both impressive, especially when it seemed the pressure couldn’t get any greater. Santa Cruz stranded three runners, all of whom were in scoring position, while SLV left nine runners on base, five of whom were in scoring position.

Credit both defenses, too, each of which turned non-traditional double plays.

It’s almost unfortunate the game ended the way it did — on an error, although it’s not the type of game to hang your head about.

Scott actually came in for relief during the previous game with SLV — an 8-2 Cougars victory. SLV scored six runs in the first inning of that game, though, when Scott came in and surrendered just two more runs — both unearned — over the remaining 5+ innings.

That outing instilled some extra confidence into the senior for Tuesday’s start.

“I knew from last game, they scored on errors,” Scott said after Tuesday’s game. “And I knew if we had fewer errors than them, then we’d beat them.”

Santa Cruz has now surpassed its league win total from a year ago.

SCCAL softball starting to shape up

We’re finally starting to see the SCCAL standings shake out — now that the rain has stopped and games are being played — and so far, it’s kind of what everyone expected.

Soquel is unbeaten and in first place. SLV is right behind them, and Santa Cruz has proven to be the best of the remaining teams — at least through the first half of the season.

The two-loss Cardinals can make the race even more interesting with a win today. They’re hosting one-loss SLV at 4 p.m.

Santa Cruz already lost to SLV — 8-2 on March 22. But the Cougars scored six runs in the first inning of that game, before the Cardinals put in Alex Scott in relief. Scott allowed two runs over the remaining 5+ innings — neither of which were earned.

Expect Scott to make the start today.

A win for SLV would be key, too. Its only loss has come to Soquel, but that was over separate days when the two teams’ original game was rained out. Tough to put a ton of stock into that, but a win is a win. The rematch comes Thursday.

While there is more of an order in the SCCAL now than there was a week, two weeks ago, I wouldn’t say the SCCAL is wrapped up yet. The amount of rain-outs teams had early in the season will lead to three-game, maybe even four-game weeks — depending upon how many games are actually rescheduled.

Strange things tend to happen when a team is playing its fourth game in a single week.

SLV’s Lipperd named CCAA Pitcher of the Week for 3rd time

SLV grad Samantha Lipperd continues to shine for Sonoma State. On Monday, the junior pitcher was named CCAA Pitcher of the Week for a third time this season and a fifth time in the last two seasons.

We caught up with Lipperd earlier this season after one crazy week in which she struck out 26 batters in an 11-inning game, among many other highlights.

Last week, in a four-game slate against Cal State Stanislaus, Lipperd tossed four complete games, earned four wins, and allowed two runs over 29 innings  for a 0.48 ERA. She surrendered just nine hits in 91 at-bats — for a .099 batting average for Stanislaus — and allowed just one hit in Saturday night’s game.

Strikeouts, again, were the name of the game for Lippered, though. One year after setting the single-season record at Sonoma with 324, Lipperd shattered her own record last weekend when she struck out 38 batters over four games for a total of 332 strikeouts on the season.

And there are still four games left in the regular season. Lipperd and Sonoma State will wrap up the season with a four-game series at San Francisco State, set to begin Friday.

And then there’s this, taken for Sonoma State’s website:

In 117 career appearances, Lipperd is 73-27 with a 1.53 ERA and is just one win shy of setting the school record for most career wins as a pitcher.  Since breaking the school record for most career strikeouts (which was previously 426), Lipperd has amassed for 798, just two short of 800 for her career.  She already holds almost every pitching record in SSU softball history, including opponent batting average (.179), strikeouts (798), strikeouts per seven-inning game (8.43), strikeouts looking (173), appearances (117), starts (103), complete games (74), among others.

New Mexico State’s Shin leads at Western Intercollegiate

Justin Shin of New Mexico State recorded a 3-under 137 through 36 holes Saturday to take a 1-stroke lead into Sunday’s final round of the 66th Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz.

Shin leads Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers, who is at 2-under. Rodgers tied for the low score over 18 holes on Saturday when he shot a 67 during his opening round. The Cardinal finished his day by compiling an 71 on the second round of 18.

Texas’ Jordan Spieth is sitting in third place at 1-under, ahead of six other golfers who are even through 36 holes. UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay, who won the Masters low-amateur title last weekend, and Texas’ Dylan Frittelli, the No. 1-ranked collegiate golfer, according to the GolfWeek/Sagarin rankings, are part of that group.

Texas, which is the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, is living up to its poll position. As a team, the Longhorns lead through 36 holes after they compiled a 4-over 704. They hold a nine-stroke lead on Stanford and an 11-stroke lead on UCLA with 18 holes to play.

The Western Intercollegiate will continue today at Pasatiempo. Players will tee off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Bryan Stow’s son throws out first pitch at Giants’ home opener

Bryan Stow wasn’t able to make it to AT&T Park for Friday’s game. But his son did.

Tyler Stow made the ceremonial first pitch during the Giants’ home opener in San Francisco, in honor of his father.

Before Tyler could make the game’s first toss, though, he was escorted out by relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt and the rest of the Giants. Later, the video Jumbotron showed Bryan Stow, baseball in hand, and his mother, Ann, who thanked all the fans for showing their love and support the past year.

Ann said they had hoped Bryan would be able to attend the game, but he’s still working hard in therapy. She then told Tyler his dad was going to hand him the ball.

“Tyler, here’s the ball,” Bryan said on the video screen, holding the ball forward as if to present it to Tyler.

“Good luck, son,” he added.

Receiving the ball from Affeldt, Tyler then winded up before throwing the ceremonial first pitch across the plate — from the rubber.

Emotional stuff.

Tyler received high-fives from players afterward, including Sergio Romo and Javier Lopez.

More options for female athletes

There could be another team in the Coast Conference for women’s basketball — and another option for hoops players in the area.

Gavilan College in Gilroy, which used to have a women’s basketball program, has an opening for a women’s basketball coach and a kinesiology instructor. The position was opened on March 28.

You can read up on it here and here.

Also recently, West Hills College in Lemoore announced it would have a women’s basketball team beginning in the fall, while San Jose State said it plans on having a women’s track team beginning in 2014.

County teams will stay together in MBL hoops next season

There will be major changes in the Monterey Bay League next season. But the Watsonville, Pajaro Valley and Monte Vista Christian basketball teams will be sticking together.

The MBL is joining teams from the Tri-County Athletic League next season to form a two-tiered “super league,” with select teams moving up and down in order to seek equity.

In boys basketball, Christopher, Monterey and Seaside are moving up into the stronger Gabilan Division, while Alisal, North Salinas and Gilroy will play with the three Santa Cruz County teams in the Pacific Division.

In girls hoops, Seaside and Christopher are moving up. Alvarez and Gilroy are moving down.

Here’s how it will all look for boys and girls basketball next season.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Gabilan: Palma, Alvarez, San Benito, Salinas, Monterey, Seaside, Christopher.
Pacific: North Salinas, Pajaro Valley, Watsonvile, Alisal, Gilroy, North Monterey County, Monte Vista Christian.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Gabilan: Notre Dame, San Benito, North Salinas, Seaside, Salinas, Christopher, Alisal.
Pacific: Monte Vista Christian, Pajaro Valley, Watsonville, Gilroy, North Monterey County, Monterey, Alvarez.
