Aptos alum Kostreba receives honors; Cal preps for Berkeley Regional

There are a couple notes to pass along before the Cal softball team plays in the Berkeley Regional.

Cal is hosting the Berkeley Regional this weekend to kick off the NCAA Tournament. It will play Iona on Friday night at 7 p.m., with Boston University and Arkansas competing in the earlier game at 5 p.m.

The regional will last through Sunday, with the winner taking on the champ of the Seattle Regional — expected to be the Univ. of Washington.

You can buy tickets to the Berkeley Regional here.

Both Aptos’ Breana Kostreba and Scotts Valley’s Nikki Owens compete on the Golden Bears. On Wednesday, Kostreba was named All-Pac-12 honorable mention and to the All-Freshman Team. She finished the regular season with a .318 batting average (42 of 132) with 10 doubles, 12 homers and 38 RBIs.

Said Kostreba to CalBears.com:

“I’m honored and surprised. I never expected this award my freshman year.”

Interestingly, while the softball team is perhaps more than prepared for the Regional — it went 50-4 this season and is a heavy favorite to emerge from the Berkeley Regional — the athletic department is in prep mode. They have to build a temporary press box, set up temporary lights and a create a warm-up facility on an adjacent field, according to sfgate.com.

Locally, Santa Cruz High softball coach Jocelyn Forest said she’ll be traveling north to watch the Berkeley Regional. Her involvement is kind of two-fold — not only did she play for the 2002 national championship softball team at Cal, but she also previously coached softball at Boston University.

Updated college softball stats

Here are your updated collegiate stats among softball players from Santa Cruz County.

Not too much change from prior weeks. The West Valley softball team had some changes, as did Cal, of course.

The Golden Bears are hosting the Berkeley Regional this weekend, by the way.

Enjoy.

CCS seeding meeting for softball could be interesting

I’m wondering about the Santa Cruz softball team’s chances at qualifying for the Central Coast Section playoffs. Seems like a stupid thing to consider since they’re league champions and all.

But I’m pretty sure Santa Cruz will come out on the short end of the tiebreaker in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.

The Cardinals earned a share of the SCCAL title on Thursday when they defeated St. Francis. It’s the first league title for Santa Cruz since 1988, according to mbaypreps.com.

But they will share the title with both Soquel and SLV, each of whom finished with 10-2 records. In the SCCAL, that’s a 3-way co-championship.

But league bylaws also break down the tiebreakers for deciding the automatic playoff berths, of which the SCCAL only receives two. The first tiebreaker is head-to-head, which doesn’t apply since Soquel, SLV and Santa Cruz each went 2-2 against one another.

The next criteria is CCS power points. And although I have no idea what the power points will show in the end, I’d imagine Santa Cruz would come in behind Soquel and SLV since it was 10-11 overall this season.

By comparison, Soquel was 18-8 and SLV was 20-4 during the season.

If that is the case, if Santa Cruz is positioned third among the SCCAL league champions because of power points, then Soquel and SLV would receive the two automatic playoff berths and Santa Cruz would have to apply to CCS as an at-large team — even though it won a league title.

If that sounds stupid, well, it’s because it is.

And this is where it could be interesting. Again, I have no idea how it will all shake out and where everyone will stand once the power points of each team are laid out on the table. But SLV narrowly made it in last season as an at-large team, and they went 16-11 overall.

Santa Cruz does get extra points for being a league champion, but will it be enough? I hope so.

The CCS seeding meeting is today, Saturday.

SCCAL softball title to be decided today

Today is the final day of softball in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, and there’s still a lot of moving to be done.

What we know: San Lorenzo Valley has already wrapped up at least a share of the SCCAL title. The Cougars accomplished as much on Tuesday by defeating Harbor 6-2 to finish with a 10-2 record. It’s SLVs third title in the last four years.

Now, the SCCAL title could be all SLVs to enjoy, or it could be a two-way title or even a three-way title — that all depends on what Soquel and Santa Cruz do today.

Soquel will host Aptos today, while Santa Cruz visits St. Francis. A win for either Soquel or Santa Cruz would give them 10 wins and a share of the SCCAL title with SLV.

For Soquel, it would be a repeat performance. The Knights won it last year with Aptos.

For Santa Cruz, it’d be the Cardinals’ first since 1987-88, according to mbaypreps.com.

Of course, a loss for either team would eliminate them for being included in the SCCAL title discussion.

If everything pans out as expected — both Soquel and Santa Cruz defeated their respective opponents earlier this season — we’d have a three-way title.

Where it gets interesting is when discussing playoff seedings in the Central Coast Section. The SCCAL only receives two automatic playoff bids, meaning one of the league champions (if it is a three-way title) would have to apply as an at-large team.

I’ll bring that up on Friday, once the SCCAL standings are finalized.

Soquel-SC softball game carries big league implications

Kind of a big softball game today between Soquel and host Santa Cruz.

The visiting Knights are 9-1 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League and are in the driver’s seat toward winning a third straight league championship. A win today over Santa Cruz would all but ensure another title.

But there is nobody hotter than the Cardinals (8-2) right now. They’ve won six straight league games, including a wild 1-0 victory over SLV that took nine innings to decide.

Santa Cruz is tied with SLV right now at 8-2, behind one-loss Soquel. But all of that could change with a Cardinals win today.

Soquel will play at Santa Cruz at 4 p.m.

Santa Cruz lost to Soquel 6-1 already this season, but that game came on April 12. For what it’s worth, Santa Cruz also lost to SLV earlier this season, by a 8-2 margin, only to narrowly upset the Cougars in recent weeks.

Teams improve, obviously.

And Santa Cruz is playing with a boat load of confidence since dropping SLV.

If Santa Cruz wins today, we’d have a three-way tie atop the SCCAL standings, which means the rule books and bylaws would be broken out to decide how it’s all decided. If Soquel wins, it would place the Knights a game-ahead of SLV in the loss column with just one game remaining.

Santa Cruz would drop to third place, in that scenario. In other words, plenty at stake for the Cardinals today.

Cal softball garners No. 1 ranking again

Cal softball grabbed the undisputed No. 1 ranking in the nation after it swept Oregon State last weekend. This is the seventh straight week the Golden Bears have been ranked No. 1.

Aptos alum Breana Kostreba and Scotts Valley’s Nikki Owens play on the team. Kostreba connected on her 12th homer during the second game of the three-game series with the Beavers.

Of course, despite Cal’s dominance this season — the team is 48-3 overall, 19-2 in Pac-12 play — the conference title will come down to this weekend’s final three-game series with visiting Arizona State.

The Sun Devils are 17-2 in the Pac-12 and ranked No. 2 in the nation. Although, according to the Cal website, ASU had two games rained out during the conference slate. And since the final standings are based on winning percentage, whichever team wins 2 of 3 this weekend will earn the automatic bid toward the NCAA Tournament.

No tennis team, just individuals for Santa Cruz at CCS

It appears the Santa Cruz High boys tennis team lost its case for qualifying to the Central Coast Section Boys Team Tennis Championships on Monday. The Cardinals aren’t listed on the 24-team bracket that was recently released.

Santa Cruz went undefeated in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League this season and finished in first place. But with too few teams in the SCCAL (Soquel was without a boys tennis program), the league itself lost its automatic berth toward the CCS Championships.

While league champions like Santa Cruz are often automatic qualifiers, the Cardinals were instead forced to petition the CCS as an at-large team.

Obviously, no dice. Head coach Dan Dewey said it was 50/50 on whether Santa Cruz would advance to CCS.

Still, as a silver lining, singles player Walker Nodine and the doubles pairing of Ben Bacher and Carl Thigpen will compete in the CCS Boys Individual Tennis Championships after each won their respective division at the SCCAL Championships.

Nodine will open the tournament against A.J. Flora of Silver Creek on Monday, May 14, at the Imperial Courts in Aptos. Bacher and Thigpen, meanwhile, will play against Leigh’s John Van Brunt and Soharb Sedeghi that same day at Imperial Courts.
