In case you didn’t see it, the Atlantic Monthly ran a lively article about the soon-to-be Grateful Dead archive to be housed at UC Santa Cruz, and UCSC’s resident Dead keeper of the flame, music prof Fred Lieberman.
The piece is a intriguing look into what purpose the magnificent treasure trove of Grateful Dead material will serve. But, Deadheads should note, the archive is far from opening. An archivist for the material is still yet to be hired (though he/she may be named this month), and, Lieberman told me, the Archive itself, isn’t likely to open until the retrofitting of the McHenry library is complete, a process that has been delayed by the state budget crisis. Target date for a ribbon cutting is still a year away.
In the meantime, there’s always the live music. Check out, for instance, Wake the Dead, a Bay Area band that interprets the Dead’s work through Celtic music. The band comes to Kuumbwa on March 14.
