One of the great, underappreciated chroniclers of contemporary American life is Texas singer/songwriter James McMurtry. McMurtry has played Don Quixote’s in Felton several times in the past, and he’s been booked for two new dates Feb. 13 and 14. With an affect and a viewpoint as dry as the Texas Panhandle, McMurtry’s not for sentimentalists (which may make this show not the best choice for a Valentine’s Day date). But the man is a brilliantly incisive songwriter, and his music really kicks aspirin.
Also, newly booked: The Santa Cruz White Album Ensemble comes to the Rio Theatre for two end-of-the-year dates. The boys play their original “White Album” show on Dec. 29 and then follow that up with a show they’re calling “Beatles and Beyond” which will feature music from the solo careers of each of the four ex-Beatles. If you haven’t experienced these WAE shows yet and you’re a Beatles’ fan, run, don’t walk down to the Rio for tickets.
Mary McCaslin, the wonderful Santa Cruz singer/songwriter, comes to Don Quixote’s Dec. 14. The North Mississippi All-Stars play at the Rio Jan. 28, and a duo called AE, featuring Santa Cruz native Eva Primack plays the Kuumbwa Dec. 1.
