Ex Mazzy Star siren comes to Santa Cruz

Hope Sandoval, the lead singer of the 1990s neo-psychedelic duo Mazzy Star, has just been booked for a show at the Brookdale Inn & Spa on Sept. 18. For those not hip to the Mazzy sound, Sandoval and her musical partner David Roback made a trio of gorgeously produced albums of songs known for their dreamy, languorous melodies and Sandoval’s sedate but heartbroken vocal styles.

In recent years, Sandoval has been leading her own band, the Warm Inventions, who will be with her at Brookdale. If you’re the kind who likes beautifully nuanced dream-pop, she’s one to discover.

Also just booked is the Brazilian superstar Milton Nascimento who will perform along with the well-known Chilean singer Claudia Acuna at the Rio on Nov. 9, in a show presented by the Kuumbwa Jazz Center.
