Sarah Palin: Who’s laughing now?

What is it about Sarah Palin that continues to drive the media-ocracy and the political classes … um, wild?

The bombardment of cable TV rant-a-thons, talk shows, Internet blogs (!) and print articles about Palin have reached a new crescendo as she goes out on tour for her new book, “Going Rogue.”

The right, of course, loves her, convinced the media is trying to destroy her because she plays to the Republican base and the anti-Washington, populist-religious, Obama-is-a-socialist  bent. What’s strange is how the left, while expressing disdain and contempt for the former Alaska governor, simply can’t shut up about her, even as commentators deplore her finger pointing and sense of persecution.

Newsweek went so far as to put out a cover story, picturing the former governor in shorts and a cheesy pose — and you can make your own judgments about why.

Is it because she is such a danger to the future of our country? Are people hoping Tina Fey will once again make her an object of derision? Is everyone waiting for some abominable interview with an unctuous interviewer to once again expose Ms. Palin as woefully underinformed? Do political types love how she takes on the McCain campaign aides or male politicians who look down on her?  Or is it this: no one quite knows what to do with an attractive woman who refuses to play by the politico-media rules? Maybe that’s why Oprah was making nice with Ms. Palin this week, why Barbara Walters gave her a sympathetic interview,  and why Hillary Clinton so far has refused to take her on.

There are as many opinions on Palin as there are interviews and speculations. Here’s one from an Anchorage, Alaska columnist who compares her to … Norman Mailer (hint: Palin like Mailer is not a leader but a master of self promotion).

And here’s an LA Times column about Palin’s political future and the “intimate bond” she holds with some voters and many Americans who also feel victimized and put down by a ruling elite that looks at them with condescension …  and could be brought down … by a woman going rogue.

I wonder if part of the Left’s venom for Palin has something to do with the rise 10 years ago of George W. Bush? Nobody on the Left took him seriously, even as he became the obvious front runner for the Republican nomination. He was seen as uninformed, lazy, perhaps a little stupid, and stunningly unqualified for the office. Now, here comes Sarah Palin with almost the same baggage as Bush (with the notable exception of dynastic connections). And look what happened with Bush. He won the presidency – twice. For anybody on the informed Left or Right, that was a real eye-opener. Could it happen again? Does that explain some of the vitriol? Perhaps.

Ah, Sarah Palin. Five kids, handsome, manly man husband, worked on fishing boat, didn’t go to an elite school on scholarship, instead worked her way through doing various odd jobs, got involved in the …. PTA…. omygosh … city council …. omygosh … governor.

An ordinary Mom in politics …. can’t have that!

There are legitimate criticisms of Sarah Palin as VP candidate, and the right time for these is long past. Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow can’t seem to get over her, though. They have forgotten about silky John Edwards, and they never mention real criminals like John Jefferson (D) Louisiana. Barney Frank’s boyfriend worked for Fannie Mae while boobles Barney was in charge of oversight …. never a word. Barack Obama … mums the word on the many radical connections.

But Sarah Palin … shouldn’t she have had an abortion? Had the decency to defer to her betters who went to Harvard?

A sad commentary on the public reaction to a woman who is salt of the earth.

    Well said, Ampersand.

Could not have possibly said it better, Ampersand.

The mass media hates a woman who is not a supporter of the arbortion rights lobby. They hate guns and people who shoot wild game. How dare she harvest her own meat, which isn’t laced with all kinds of artificial hormones and chemicals.

Santa Cruz has it’s own wacko and stoner politicians right here at home. Weite about them! Geoff Dunn is all wrapped up in writing a book about a gun toting politician from the Arctic Circle.

Sarah Palin is a lightweight in my book, without any federal experience in congress or the executive branch. She’s hardly president material.

    Hey Ampersand:

Barney Frank’s boyfriend got busted for growing weeds last week. The congressman was there; when the police arrived. He tried to play “stupid”, by claiming that he doesn’t even know what a marijuana plant looks like. This is not believeable after 40 years of arguing about the issue. Dope plants are on the TV news and in the papers all of the time. Nobody really believes Frank’s newest lie.

I never thought Barbara Walters, Katie Couric, and David Letterman were very good. I change the channels when I see them and I put no credence into anything they have to say. I like the way Sarah carries herself. She’s easy on the eyes. A strong, good-looking woman with family values. Maybe a threat to some…

Well said, Ampersand. The elitist left cannot seem to get over the fact that she actually connected with the people. And Tom?…there is a big difference between her and Bush. Bush had connections, Palin has convictions. We need more ordinary people without the Harvard connections or the leftist wacko connections either. Unfortunately our system seems so far tilted against the common man to get into office. It’s no wonder there are very few honorable people willing to expose themselves to the vitriol of the media and political activists both on the far left and right.

Sarah Palin, being a Republican, fits the narrative. When is the last time anyone said any Republican was bright? All Republicans are dumb, according to the narrative.

If she was a Democrat, you can bet none of this vitriol would be heading her way. It’s laughable to me that people call Palin a lightweight, but say nothing about Pelosi.

The media and party elites will never forgive her for her humble origins, lack of connections, and lack of ivy league diploma.

(Frankly, it’s beyond me why so-called feminists so blindly support the Democratic party – after what they did to Hillary last election, it’s pretty clear that the Democrats are no more woman-friendly than anyone else. Those so-called feminists are just hypocrites, I guess.)

Sarah Palin is NOT the salt of the earth and family values? Yep look at Bristol.

Like Levi Johnson they are both users of the system in order to promote their own selfish interests. I mean we only have to look at how see is behaving now and in the past during the run for VP.

I believe Palin represents where America might be going to the future and the view doesn’t look to good.

We promote education and then want someone to run for president that just isn’t qualified. It would be a hoot to have her as president and see other world leaders laughing behind her back and at the US.

Sarah represents that die hards that only see the US as Number 1, world power and leader. Only yesterday did we see with Obama in China that we are quickly becoming not Number 1 or the only world power. The US is on a collision course ideologically with the rest of the world, which happens to be 5.7 Billion other people.

Unless something miraculous happens to Sarah Palin she is woefully inadequate to deal with a world that is growing into a high technology civilization with a hunger for the things China and India are creating.

I am not threatened by Sarah Palin; I am disappointed that people would actually think she is capable of being president. I don’t think she could even be as good as Bush. It just shows how low the expectations are of people.

So – sorry Don, but that went nowhere. Take a stand and make a point please? If you are a secret Palin admirer you might as well come out of the closet.

Your fascination with Palin helps reveal why the Senile has no chance in a town where people are, on average, fairly well educated. Living my whole life here the paper has always been out of touch with the county it serves. Which is why it is failing.

Palin? She’s a pathetic, clueless (yet aggressive) joke who barely knows what continent she is on. Come on. Better to elect a chihuahua, less likely to get us all killed.

  • wasted

why are u even writing about her then? waste-of-not-paper

“Living my whole life here the paper has always been out of touch with the county it serves. Which is why it is failing.”

I 100% agree. The paper, when it was an actual paper, was best used as TP.

This is really great entertainment watching the lefties go absolutely crazy attacking Palin continually by the main stream Obama Democrat controlled media while Palin laughs all the way to the bank! Good God, they hate the fact this sucessful, beautiful woman is the eptiomy of a feminist except for the fact she is a sucessful conservative Christain woman! Palins popularity just eats at their stomachs like an ulcer as she contiunually draws huge crowds and is now making millions from her book!

  • wendyr

my god, it’s peggy hill. her timbre is so annoying , i can’t even listen to her.
i keep hearing, ” i tell those pesky russians to shoo”. oh well, guess i didn’t miss much not finishing this interview. has our consciousness really descended into this person as some “choice’ for something? bad form, america!
    ariana huffington, where are you?

  • Yay Palin

Ampersand has it so right. The presidency demands so little skill that anyone can do it. The more ordinary the better! I think I’ll pick my health care provider the same way. Who needs medical knowledge? I’d rather be treated by (to use your words) “ordinary Mom” with no special training. Oh yeah – and I think I’ll follow the same path the next time my car needs repair. There are some perfectly nice moms on my street. I’ll ask one of them to do the job instead of using a skilled mechanic. Just as long as they have white teeth and the right position on abortion, I’m sure they can handle the job.
