What is it about Sarah Palin that continues to drive the media-ocracy and the political classes … um, wild?
The bombardment of cable TV rant-a-thons, talk shows, Internet blogs (!) and print articles about Palin have reached a new crescendo as she goes out on tour for her new book, “Going Rogue.”
The right, of course, loves her, convinced the media is trying to destroy her because she plays to the Republican base and the anti-Washington, populist-religious, Obama-is-a-socialist bent. What’s strange is how the left, while expressing disdain and contempt for the former Alaska governor, simply can’t shut up about her, even as commentators deplore her finger pointing and sense of persecution.
Newsweek went so far as to put out a cover story, picturing the former governor in shorts and a cheesy pose — and you can make your own judgments about why.
Is it because she is such a danger to the future of our country? Are people hoping Tina Fey will once again make her an object of derision? Is everyone waiting for some abominable interview with an unctuous interviewer to once again expose Ms. Palin as woefully underinformed? Do political types love how she takes on the McCain campaign aides or male politicians who look down on her? Or is it this: no one quite knows what to do with an attractive woman who refuses to play by the politico-media rules? Maybe that’s why Oprah was making nice with Ms. Palin this week, why Barbara Walters gave her a sympathetic interview, and why Hillary Clinton so far has refused to take her on.
There are as many opinions on Palin as there are interviews and speculations. Here’s one from an Anchorage, Alaska columnist who compares her to … Norman Mailer (hint: Palin like Mailer is not a leader but a master of self promotion).
And here’s an LA Times column about Palin’s political future and the “intimate bond” she holds with some voters and many Americans who also feel victimized and put down by a ruling elite that looks at them with condescension … and could be brought down … by a woman going rogue.
