Trial date of April 28 set for Robert Brunette, accused of mistreating dogs

SANTA CRUZ – The jury trial of a Boulder Creek man accused of mistreating more than 50 puppies and adult dogs on his rural property last summer will begin April 28, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Robert Brunette, who is representing himself, had filed a motion to suppress all evidence in the case based on allegations of an illegal search and seizure. A judge heard the motion Wednesday and denied the claim, so the trial date was set.

County Animal Services seized his dogs in early August after a neighbor reported seeing malnourished, sickly dogs on his Hartman Creek Road property. Brunette, a self-described dog breeder, was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty. He faces four years in state prison.

Dogs are more important than human beings in this county.

Yes here, dogs are far more important than humans, but why does he get only four years max if there were fifty dogs involved? Humans who sympathize with animals lack sense, I see all sorts of single dog incidents all labeled as a felony. There ought to be a word for people who anthropomorphize, to the extent I see here. These dogs should all be euthanized, but I suspect they will get therapy.
