There have been some posts on the Santa Cruz Sentinel Forum about a “Deadly beating on the westside” that should be clarified.
Yes, there was a bar fight at a Mission Street establishment last week, but no one was beaten to death (or “stomped,” as one reader who phoned in described it to me Wednesday).
According to Santa Cruz police Lt. Rick Martinez, a “bar brawl” occurred there around closing time and one male victim was flown to an out-of-county trauma center with head and neck injuries.
But “nobody died and nobody’s going to die,” Martinez said Wednesday.
The fight happened outside the bar when two or three people attacked the man. They might have been arguing about a woman, Martinez said. He wouldn’t comment on who was involved, but said that no arrests have been made and investigators are trying to figure out if the case is prosecutable.
Sorry it didn’t make it in the paper sooner so rumors and speculation didn’t start up, but there’s the word from police. If something more happened, let me know.

John Amenta asked
“What we’re they fighting over?” this morning.
( I inadvertently deleted his comment. Apologies.)
