Aptos’ Fraser goes off for Portland

Dear West Coast Conference baseball officials, you likely won’t get this in time or even care what this lil’ blogger has to say, but, nonetheless, I’d like to nominate Portland’s Beau Fraser as your Player of the Week.

Fraser, a sophomore out of Aptos High, simply tore it up in four games for the Pilots, who followed up their 6-5 nonconference loss to Washington on Wednesday with a weekend sweep of Loyola Marymount in conference play.

The Pilots won 17-2 on Friday, 5-1 on Saturday and 13-12 on Sunday to improve to 23-9 overall and 8-1 in WCC play.

Here’s Fraser’s offensive numbers, game by game:

WEDNESDAY: 1-for-4 with his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot.

FRIDAY: 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

SATURDAY: 3-for-4.

SUNDAY: 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. He hit his sixth double of the season and fifth home run.

That’s 9-for-16 [.563] with a double, two home runs, 11 RBIs and six runs scored. What is this Little League?

With his week, Fraser, ranked in the top 10 in conference for batting average, will likely jump into the top 5.

On the season, Fraser leads the Pilots in average [.387], slugging [.585], homers and RBIs [34].

I understand he may not get your vote. If he doesn’t get named for the honor, I know he’ll continue to go out and play hard and shine.

Those kids in Portland seem to have a knack for proving themselves. [WCC coaches voted Portland to finish in conference, yet they currently sit atop the standings.]

Anyway, consider this one vote for Fraser.

    PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland sophomore C/DH Beau Fraser is the West Coast Conference Player of the week after going 8-for-12 (.667) at the plate to help the Pilots sweep the Loyola Marymount Lions at Joe Etzel Field. Fraser hit .562 overall during Portland’s four games last week and he belted two home runs and drove in 11 runs.

    On Friday, the native of Aptos, Calif., had two hits in four at bats, registered four RBI’s and scored two runs during UP’s 17-2 win over the Lions. He followed that performance with back-to-back 3-for-4 showings during Saturday’s 5-1 win and Sunday’s 13-12 victory. Fraser hit a two-run blast on Sunday, hit a double, drove in four runs and scored three times. His other homer came during a 6-5 loss to Washington on Wednesday. He drove in three of Portland’s five runs against the Huskies with the long fly.

    Fraser now leads the team with a .387 batting average, five home runs and 34 RBI’s. He ranks third in the WCC in batting average and is fourth in RBI’s.

    Portland is enjoying one of its finest seasons in program history. At 23-9, the Pilots are just two wins shy of matching last year’s win total and they have the program’s best record after 32 games since 1980. UP is 8-1 in the WCC and sits behind only San Diego, which has yet to lose in six league games. Portland’s sweep of LMU is the second three-game sweep of a conference foe this season, while the eight league wins are the most WCC wins since tallying 16 in 2002, when Portland played a 30-game league schedule.

    The Pilots recently went 5-2 during a lengthy homestand and are now 13-3 overall at the friendly confines. UP, which received 11 votes in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, is on the road this week at Washington on Tuesday and at Pepperdine during the weekend.
