SC baseball coach Arnott ejected after player’s ‘malicious contact’ on pick-off tags

Leandor Merril reached on error in the seventh inning and pinch runner Josh Friedman scored the game-winning run on an error, as Santa Cruz High’s baseball team beat visiting The King’s Academy 2-1 in a nonleague game.

Chen Duffy threw 1 1/3 innings of relief for the win. Ryan Myers took the loss for TKA (6-2).

Ross Garabaldi hada double for the Cardinals (2-5), who face Harbor in league action Friday.

First-year Cardinals coach George Arnott and first baseman Brock Theilan were ejected from the game. Arnott was tossed after Theilan was ejected for “malicious contact,” making hard tags on the runner on pick-off throws.

“I didn’t know there was a warning,” said Arnott, who repeatedly asked the official to show him what too hard a tag was.

Arnott said he’ll appeal the ejections with SCCAL commissioner Pat Lovell.
