Former Soquel High wrestler-turned-MMA star Luke Rockhold will compete in the Santa Cruz City Amateur for the first time this weekend. He carries a 9-handicap and will be in the second flight.
“When I’m on, I’m on,” said Rockhold, a former Strikeforce middleweight champion who now competes in UFC.
No extra security will be needed to accommodate the celebrity.
“I’ve always been able to handle myself,” Rockhold joked.
Rockhold, gauged in the eye while wrestling earlier this week, had time to get some practice in at DeLaveaga. He shot 81 in back-to-back rounds before heading out for another round.
Rockhold said he has a solid short game and a big driver, which he isn’t shy about using.
“I can hit it 300 yards. There are a couple holes I feel confident using it on,” he said, pointing to Nos. 4, 9, 13, 14, 17 and 18. “Or I’ll use my 3-iron a lot.”
Rockhold said he doesn’t know of any other MMA fighters who golf.
“I guess I take the cake on that one,” he said. “I’m a competitor.”
Perhaps the selection committee for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am will take notice.
Rockhold tees off at 11:50 on the first tee on Saturday.
“Talk to later,” Rockhold said during a practice round, “probably after I win Sunday.”
