Olson will attempt to make PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open field at Monday qualifier

Aptos’ Eddie Olson shot 68 in the Waste Management Phoenix Open pre-qualifier at McCormick Ranch Golf Club’s Palm Course in Arizona on Thursday.

Olson tied for second with Bennett Blakeman, four strokes behind medalist Jordan Krantz. The top nine finishers and ties at the pre-qualifier advance to Monday’s qualifer at McCormick Ranch’s Pine Course.

Two other pre-qualifiers were also held Thursday.

The top four players will advance from Monday’s qualifier into the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open, which is being held at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona from Thursday through Sunday. It’s expected that Soquel’s Nate Smith, a PGA Tour rookie, will compete in the event.

Olson, who previously competed at Aptos High and UNLV, competes on the Gateway Pro Tour after an injury felled his bid to go through PGA Tour Q-school.┬áHe is trying to compete in his second PGA event. He received a sponsor’s exemption to compete in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals Open in Las Vegas in October. There, he tied for 111th with a 2-over-par 144 total.
